Bert's Story

Bert is a good boy! While he might be considered a "senior" he has the energy and enthusiasm of a young dog. He explores the world through scent and will take his time smelling all kinds of trees and bushes on his walks. He is friendly with people and other dogs, and very welcoming. He loves belly rubs and walks. He takes advantage of his longer body type and is curious about any items left out on a table that he can smell!
He's an easy-going dog that enjoys being around people and adapts very quickly to his new environment. Bert is housetrained and is good about sleeping through the night in his crate.

Bert was transferred to Valley Humane on 1/29 from the Tri-City Animal Shelter. He had been found stray. Bert weighs 25 pounds and is estimated to be aged between 7 and 10 years.

This dog has been diagnosed and/or treated for the below conditions. VHS won't be able to provide any additional medical care after the time of adoption so we ask that the new family agree to continue his care.
Flea allergy dermatitis - This dog likely has a flea allergy, which means that the dog is allergic to flea bites. Dogs with this condition can develop very itchy skin and hair loss even when they only have a few fleas. The new adopters are advised to keep up with monthly flea prevention in order to control this flea allergy.
Periodontal disease – this dog recently had a dental cleaning at VHS. At this time, he required extraction of all incisor teeth and both mandibular canine teeth (unfortunately his worn teeth were likely due to self-chewing from untreated flea allergy). While he is healing, canned food only and no access to hard toys is recommended through 2/12/2026.
Cataracts – this dog has a mature cataract in the right eye and a small, immature cataract in the left eye. Cataracts are a hardening of the lens of the eye resulting in an opaque white appearance to the eye. Cataracts can be removed via surgery performed by a veterinary ophthalmologist and can restore a great deal of the dog’s vision. If the adopting family wishes to pursue this option, they are advised to discuss this referral with their veterinarian.

Do you have questions about this animal or are you ready to take the next step to adoption? Pleasanton Valley Humane Society's Adoption Policy
How It Works Potential adopters can read an animal’s profile to determine if the pet would be a good fit for their home and lifestyle. Copy and paste the application URL from the animal’s profile or click to apply. Once the application is received, an adoption counselor will call to discuss the match. Be ready to answer the call from Valley Humane as soon as your application is submitted. Animals shown on our website are ready to go home. We typically schedule an adoption appointment within 24-48 hours of approving an application where you can meet the pet and complete paperwork. Once you’ve decided a pet is the right fit for your family, the adoption counselor will walk you through our adoption agreement. All pertinent medical information will be provided to you, as well as a take-home packet including information on feeding your new pet. We will also verify that the animals’ microchip is accurate and prepare them for travel. Finally, we will collect the adoption fee. Please allow approximately one hour to complete the adoption process. After taking a quick picture to share on social media (optional, of course!), you’re ready to head home and start enjoying life with your new friend
