Bert does not.<br/><br/>Bert is a 44-pound Australian Shepherd mix with a brain that never seems to turn off, a heart approximately the size of Wisconsin, and a zest for life that is downright contagious. After a rough beginning, Bert has decided that the past is officially old news.<br/><br/>His future? Adventure. Training. Frisbees. Belly rubs. Cozy beds. His people. Repeat. And preferably all of the above before dinner. Let's GOOOOO!<br/><br/>Bert is the kind of dog who makes you realize just how incredible a dog can become when someone takes the time to understand him. He isn't “difficult.” He's intentional. He knows what he likes, he communicates what he needs, and he thrives with people who listen.<br/><br/>Respect his boundaries. Move thoughtfully. Build his trust. And then, watch this dog absolutely bloom.<br/><br/>Once You're His Person, You're REALLY His Person. Bert may take a little time to decide you're worthy of admission to the Inner Circle, but once you're in, you're IN. He becomes ridiculously affectionate and loyal, handing out snuggles like they're going out of style and gazing lovingly at his people as though they've personally invented sunshine.<br/><br/>His morning routine is particularly spectacular: Bert performs a military-style crawl to the top of the bed, determined to get himself as close to his humans as physically possible. Honestly, it's one of the best parts of the day.<br/><br/>He also has an exceptional talent for appearing beside you when a back scratch or belly rub is clearly overdue. Afterward, he delivers his signature side-eye and what can only be described as a Woody Woodpecker expression. He is, in a word, hilarious.<br/><br/> Bert Has a BIG Brain. Bert doesn't just want to be your dog, he wants a job. Training is his love language. Learning something new with his person? His idea of a perfect afternoon.<br/><br/>He knows, or is learning, a whole repertoire of skills including:<br/><br/>• Sit<br/>• Down<br/>• Wait<br/>• Off<br/>• Roll over<br/>• Sit pretty<br/>• And plenty more<br/><br/>Puzzle toys? Absolutely. Frisbee? Oh, we're doing that. Agility? OBSESSED.<br/><br/>Bert is incredibly bright, driven, and eager to work with his person. Give him something to learn and a human willing to teach him, and you've got yourself one very happy Australian Shepherd mix. Working-dog experience would be fantastic, but you don't have to be an agility champion or professional trainer. You simply need to enjoy having a dog who enjoys learning. Bert will happily meet you there. And then probably show you how it's done.<br/><br/> Adventure Buddy: ACTIVATED<br/><br/>Bert is not looking for a life of three leisurely trips around the block, this boy has places to go. He would love a human who enjoys hiking, exploring, training, playing and generally getting out into the world. A fenced yard is essential because Bert's yard isn't just a yard.<br/><br/>It's his:<br/><br/>Personal racetrack.<br/>Agility arena.<br/>Frisbee stadium.<br/>Parkour course.<br/>Sunbathing resort.<br/><br/>He can zoom. He can jump. He can catch. He can practice his agility moves. And yes, he will absolutely show off. But don't mistake “active” for “never stops.” Bert also thoroughly appreciates the fine art of couch potatoing with his favorite humans. Adventure outside. Snuggles inside. That's the Bert lifestyle.<br/><br/> Dogs? Yes. But Bert Likes His Social Calendar Curated. Bert enjoys other dogs and does well with thoughtful introductions. He's not really a “Let's throw 30 dogs into a fenced field and see what happens!” kind of guy. He's more “I'd like to meet a few quality individuals and perhaps arrange a hike.”<br/><br/>And we're here for that.<br/><br/>He's becoming increasingly comfortable initiating play with his dog friends and continues to build his social skills. Dog friends are welcome. Cats, however, are a hard pass. They're simply far too exciting.<br/><br/> Bert Has Opinions. And He'll Tell You About Them. One of Bert's most endearing qualities is that he communicates. He doesn't leave you wondering what's happening inside that big Australian Shepherd brain. He'll let you know.<br/><br/>Learning to read his signals—and respecting what he's telling you—is a huge part of building the relationship Bert wants. And when his humans listen, Bert responds by giving them more trust, more confidence and more of that enormous personality. He's learning to manage his excitement beautifully, too.<br/><br/>That said... You'd better prepare yourself for the Homecoming Celebration. When Bert's people come home, he is still occasionally overcome by the realization that THE MOST IMPORTANT PEOPLE IN THE UNIVERSE HAVE RETURNED. There may be enthusiasm. There may be zoomies. There may be a full-scale house party. There will definitely be a very happy dog who wants you to understand that you are the greatest human who has ever walked through the front door.<br/><br/> A Few Things Bert Would Like You to Know<br/><br/>Bert has a few quirks. We prefer to call them Bert-isms.<br/><br/>He prefers all four paws on the ground. Being picked up is not currently on his list of favorite activities. As trust grows, his comfort with new experiences continues to improve.<br/><br/>Paws are personal property. Bert needs time to become comfortable having his feet handled. Once he trusts you, he's much more cooperative, but a premed for nail trims is advisable.<br/><br/>Treats are VERY exciting. He's working hard on remembering that good manners are required before snacks are dispensed. He's a work in progress, and a very enthusiastic one.<br/><br/>Chaos isn't his thing. He would much rather go on a hike with a few dog friends he knows than attend a chaotic dog park party. In other words, Bert isn't looking for just anyone. He's looking for his people.<br/><br/> Bert's ideal family is made up of people who:<br/><br/> Enjoy training and building a genuine relationship with their dog<br/> Understand structure, boundaries, patience and trust<br/> Have a securely fenced yard<br/> Enjoy an active lifestyle—but also appreciate serious couch-and-snuggle time<br/> Are comfortable living with a smart, enthusiastic dog<br/> Will continue helping Bert build confidence and emotional regulation<br/> Understand that trust is earned rather than demanded<br/><br/>Children are okay, provided they are 12 or older, respectful and dog-savvy.<br/><br/>Another confident, compatible dog would be a wonderful bonus. Cats? No thank you, says Bert.<br/><br/> The Really Important Part<br/><br/>Bert isn't looking for someone to “fix” him. He's looking for someone who will get him. Someone who sees the incredibly smart, funny, affectionate, driven dog underneath those quirks. Someone who understands that trust isn't something you can rush, but that once Bert gives you his heart, he gives you the whole thing. Someone who wants a dog who will learn beside them, explore beside them, laugh with them, sleep beside them and occasionally launch a completely unnecessary living-room celebration because they dared to come home.<br/><br/>Bert has already done the hard part. He's opened the door to his next chapter. Now he just needs the right person to walk through it with him. Because somewhere out there is Bert's person—the human who will look at this big, brilliant, slightly ridiculous Australian Shepherd mix and say, “Yep. That's my guy.”<br/><br/>And Bert?
