Bellini's Story

Dog Name: Bellini

Breed: Mix

Sex: Female

Age: 6+ years

Weight: 60 lbs

Medical Needs: None

Housebroken: Yes

Crate trained: Yes, Bellini goes into her crate on command. She eats in her crate and is crated when I leave the house, although she loves sleeping in my bed at night.

Good in the car: Yes, she rides well in the car. We regularly go back and forth to New England and she settles in and relaxes in the back seat for the almost 5-hour drive.

Good on a leash: Yes, I walk her with a prong collar since she is a strong dog. She walks easily with the prong collar on.

Energy level: Low-Medium. Bellini is pretty laid back. She likes being outside and lying in the sun whenever she can.

Need a fenced in yard: No. She will challenge my 4' chain link fence (and win) when the spirit moves her, although she seems to respect the vinyl privacy fence at doggie daycare. She is tethered on a long line when out in my yard which allows me to give her plenty of outdoor time which she really enjoys.

Dog Friendly: Yes, with slow introductions. After 1-2 weeks to acclimate, she's accepted all of the other dogs in my home and has interacted well with each of them. **I have had more than 50 other foster dogs come through my house since Bellini came to Grass Roots in late 2023, and she has been good with every single one of them. She just needs an initial “warm up period” to size them up and decide they are ok. **The activity of adoption events and other very public outings can be overwhelming for her, as her “Spidey sense” goes into overdrive, so we stick closer to home and she is just fine with staying in her comfort zone and the safety and security that brings.**

If yes, does your foster need another dog in its adoptive home? No, but she has “packed in” really well with the other dogs in my home and doesn't seem to mind them sleeping next to or even right on top of her at night.

Cat Friendly: No

Kid Friendly: There are no children in my home, but she has been good with kids she's met out and about.

If yes, what's the youngest child you'd recommend they be placed with? Any dog savvy kids, with proper supervision. Bellini is a strong dog who could inadvertently knock over a small child. That said, she does well with kids who've met and interacted with her, readily giving kisses and accepting “pets.”

Special traits that make your foster special or that we need to know about them? Bellini came as a stray to a shelter in SC with her teenage puppies, and ultimately made the trip up to Delaware. While her pups have since been adopted, this beautiful mama is still waiting for her happily ever after. Life on the street could not have been easy for her but dogs are incredibly resilient, and Bellini keeps proving every single day that she isn't going to let her past challenges keep her from enjoying the rest of her life! Bellini needs a confident handler when out in public, but she's also comfortable in her space in the house and backyard. She loves to be outdoors stretching out and soaking up sunlight. Honestly, she doesn't ask for much: Two meals a day, fresh water, some backyard time, a couple of Benebones and some treats, and a bed at night (preferably snuggled up close to her person). In return, she'll be your “ride or die” gal. She's a beautiful dog and a really sweet girl who's got lots of love to give!

Fosters Location: Wilmington, DE

Application can be found here: https://www.grrde.org/adoption-application (if you already have an approved application on file email GrassRootsDE@gmail.com and ask the app team to pull your app)
