BEAR's Story

NAME: Bear
BREED: Border Collie x Australian Shepherd mix
GENDER: Neutered Male
DOB: Jan. 2020 (est.)
WEIGHT: 57 lbs
COAT: Smooth
COLOR: Red and Tan
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active Companion
LOCATION: Remington, VA

Meet Bear!

Bear is a 1-year-old bundle of energy and love! Before Bear came to BRBCR, we were told this poor guy had been through four homes already because no one was able to handle his energy. Bear's BRBCR foster mom has discovered that he is usually content to politely play ball in the house, chew on a bone or sleep, however when it's time to play, he is all-out-full-throttle! His energy can be overwhelming to people and other pets. When he's not playing, he likes to get pets and loved on.

Having been bounced around so much already, Bear has had zero training. He appears to have never been "out in the world". He doesn't know what anything is outside the house or yard. He is apprehensive of many things, but when guided with a calm voice and treats, he will bravely check it out and then is completely fine. These fears should go away as he is exposed to more things. He seems to be unreactive to outside cats at a distance, but we have not had the opportunity to test him up close or with indoor cats. He loves all the dogs he has met, however if he meets them out of his own surroundings he is nervous and barks at them until he can get up close and learn they are a friend. Due to his size and energy level, Bear would do best in a home with only adults or older kids.

Bear is working on basic commands (sit, down, stay, come, leave it, etc.), walking on a leash, boundaries in the house and that being groomed isn't a bad thing (trying to desensitize about his feet being messed with so he stops being mouthy). He is a good watch dog, but is learning the command "enough" to stop barking after appropriate alert barks have been given.

He is housebroken and crate trained. He will try to climb in your lap to tell you if he needs to go out. He loves to play ball and catch things, so he might enjoy flyball, frisbee or really anything where he can use his brain and body. Due to his young age, he does still like to chew so will need to be crated when alone.

Bear will be best in a home with someone who is home most of the time (at least for now), another dog who loves to play, someone familiar with the energy of the herding breeds and if a fenced yard is not available you will need to find a way to let him get his play/run energy out regularly.

His adopter will need to be prepared to continue his training consistently and be willing to give him a chance to show what an incredible boy he's going to be.

If you are interested in adopting Bear, please fill out an application and then contact his foster mom, Lisa, at gottaride17@yahoo.com. All potential adopters are required to have a home visit prior to placement of one of our rescues. Bear's adoption fee is $300, and we offer a two-week trial period when you adopt one of our dogs.

Please note that we only use our website (www.BRBCR.org) and PetFinder to list our available dogs. Contact us through these two sites only. We are not associated with any other listing websites.

Thank you for considering a rescue!
