Bean the dachshund might be your perfect match.

Bean is a 6-year-old tri-color (white, black, and tan) short-haired dachshund who weighs 17.4 lbs. He was released by his previous owner due to concerns about his prey drive around their newborn baby. Bean is super playful and gets absolutely adorable zoomies when he's excited. When he winds down, he transforms into the sweetest cuddle bug who snores when he gets into a deep sleep. He loves squeaky toys and has a funny habit of stretching and dragging his back legs across anything in his path.

Environment

Bean is fully potty trained and doesn't need a backyard, making him a great fit for various living situations. He's quiet enough for a home with shared walls and loves walks—he's great on a leash and enjoys his daily outings. Bean is a companion dog who really thrives on being with his people. His crate is his happy place and he sleeps beautifully overnight, but he does struggle when left completely alone during the day. He's been left alone but spent most of the time anxious, only settling for about an hour. Bean would do best in a home where someone is around most of the time, works from home, or can bring him along. He's not suited for a family that's away for long hours regularly.

Pets & People

Bean is cautious when new guests first enter the home, but once he gets a sniff and realizes they're friendly, he's ready to play! Pro tip: if you give him a treat when you meet him, he'll love you forever. In public, he's very good with strangers who want to pet him—he's a little shy and anxious at first but absolutely loves the attention once he warms up. He licks almost everyone he meets! Bean is an only dog in his current foster home and has done better with small dogs he has met. On walks, he gets excited (not reactive) when he sees another dog approaching—no barking or timidity. At the vet, he was very calm with other dogs in the waiting room, sniffing nicely and being content. He's gentle when taking treats from humans and loves bones, which he'll take to a comfy spot to nibble.

Bean does wonderfully in the car in a dog seatbelt. He handled over 4 hours in the car on his journey to his foster home, sleeping most of the time and enjoying looking out the window. His future adopter could definitely take adventures with him.

Health & Special Needs

Bean had a dental and is currently eating soft food. He gets excited when he hears his food bag but is a grazer—he doesn't eat everything in one sitting and sometimes hasn't finished breakfast by dinnertime. His foster family is monitoring whether this is due to stress from adjusting or discomfort from his teeth, and they're trying softer food options to make eating easier for him.

Location

Bean is available for adoption from North Charleston, SC. Please email juliejohnson@littlepawsdr.org with any questions or complete an adoption application at the button above. The adoption fee for Bean is $325.00.
