Baxter's Story

Meet Baxter! (case # 12120)

Baxter is a lovable 5-year-old yellow Lab with a big heart, an even bigger personality, and a tail that never seems to stop wagging. After arriving at the shelter as an unclaimed stray, Baxter quickly won over staff with his friendly nature, goofy charm, and eagerness to connect with everyone he meets.

This handsome boy thrives on attention and is happiest when he’s by your side, whether heading out for an adventure or soaking up affection from his favorite people. Baxter is incredibly food motivated, gentle when taking treats, and always ready to learn — making him a great candidate for continued training and bonding with his future family.

Baxter can get a little overexcited at times and tends to wear his emotions on his sleeve. He’s vocal in the kennel environment and can become anxious or “amped up” when overstimulated, but with patience, structure, and positive reinforcement, he has all the potential to blossom into a confident and well-mannered companion. He’s also a strong boy on leash, so he’ll do best with someone committed to helping him continue his walking skills and channel his enthusiasm in positive ways.

Although Baxter can show some barrier reactivity, when it comes to other dogs, he has shown himself to be fairly indifferent, calmly ignoring another dog during a walk. Continued socialization will help him feel more comfortable and confident in new environments and around canine companions.

Despite the changes and uncertainty he’s faced, Baxter remains sweet, social, and full of love to give. He’s looking for someone who will see past his anxious moments and recognize the loyal, affectionate companion waiting underneath. With guidance, consistency, and a cozy place to call home, Baxter is ready to become someone’s very best friend.

Baxter recently tested positive for Lyme disease and is currently undergoing additional testing to ensure he gets the best possible care. Lyme disease in dogs is transmitted by ticks and, when caught early, is often very manageable with treatment—many dogs continue to live happy, active lives with proper veterinary care. His neuter is scheduled for May 28th and will be ready for his forever home after his recovery.

Please complete an adoption application:

https://www.hamilton.ca/home-neighbourhood/animals-pets/adopt-or-foster-pet/adoptions

Animal adoptions and viewing are by appointment only.
