Baxter 's Story

Baxter is a young pup with a big personality and an even bigger story. We believe he may be a Puggle mix, though his breed is simply our best guess based on his features since his parents are unknown.
Baxter came into our program in February after reportedly being thrown from a car window and found on the side of the highway. When he arrived, he had back leg paralysis and six broken ribs. Despite everything he had been through, Baxter has proven to be incredibly resilient and full of life.
Today, Baxter is thriving. He absolutely loves people, gets along wonderfully with other dogs, and loves kids with his whole heart. He’s the kind of pup who lights up when people are around and wants to be part of whatever is happening.
Baxter uses a wheelchair to get around and he has truly mastered it. He zooms around like a pro and even enjoys going “off-roading” around the yard and helping supervise farm chores. Watching him take off in his wheels is guaranteed to make you smile. He’s not even three months old yet, but he handles life with a confidence that would impress any dog.
At night, Baxter sleeps in a playpen with his buddy Mingo, another special-needs pup. He sleeps well through the night and wakes up ready to start the day. In the morning he happily bounces around waiting for someone to put his wheels on so he can start exploring.
Because of his spinal injury, Baxter is incontinent. He cannot control his bladder or bowels. He does have a fairly consistent routine for bowel movements, but for urination he dribbles small amounts throughout the day. For that reason, Baxter wears a belly band indoors (his current ones are stylish camo). They are changed throughout the day as needed. When he’s outside, he gets to enjoy life without them.
While this may sound like a lot, Baxter truly handles his routine very easily. He does not require constant assistance and does great in his wheelchair. When resting or unattended, he relaxes in his playpen without his wheels where he naps on his blanket and chews toys like any other happy puppy.
Aside from his wheelchair and the fact that he will not be potty trained due to his injury, Baxter is very much a normal puppy. He plays, cuddles, zooms around, and enjoys life.
Baxter is currently in a loving foster home and is very well cared for. We will only move him from his foster if it is to a committed adoptive home.
He will need standard veterinary care throughout his life and periodic wheelchair replacements as he grows or as they wear out. Otherwise, he does not require medications or specialized medical treatment. His paralysis is permanent but not painful, and he has been evaluated multiple times by a veterinarian to ensure he is healthy and comfortable.
Baxter is happy, loved, and living his best life — now he’s just looking for the family who will love him forever.
If you think you might be the perfect match for Baxter, apply to adopt.

Apply to adopt:
https://rubiesandrogues.com/pages/placement-application

Adoption fee $300 (includes vetting through our program) see here for specifics: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16xaqyrjYF/

Follow us on socials:
https://linktr.ee/rubiesandrogues
