Barney's Story

Barney came to Pet Friends several years ago after being pulled from animal control in Greensburg. We don't know why, but he gets little attention from potential adopters, possibly because he isn't a puppy anymore (Barney is likely about five or six years old) and to be honest, is kind of a "generic" dog. To look at him, you would never guess his breed (based on a DNA test, he is part German Shepherd, part Border Collie and part Pitbull). But despite his "Average Joe" looks, he is 100% an "adventure dog." Barney is ready and rarin' to go anywhere and do anything at a moment's notice. Whatever you want to do, he will do it with you and do it with enthusiasm. He loves to play fetch and has become a pretty good frisbee catcher. If you want to go for a walk in the park, count him in! If you feel like hanging out at the local winery, Barney will be your wingman. Can you trust him to behave during your adventures? For the most part, the answer is yes. Barney has successfully completed several advanced obedience classes and remembers most of what he learned. When he goes for walks, he does well on a leash but sometimes gets intent on following a good smell. He also can be a bit jumpy when greeting people and playing with his favorite toys, and he doesn't like to "drop it" when he brings those toys back to you. For that reason, Barney probably would not be a good choice for a home that has small children, and he definitely does not like cats. He often goes for walks with another dog and usually ignores other pups that he sees when he is out in the world but would need to meet any other pups that he would be living with to make sure they are compatible. Bottom line - if you are looking for an active, happy canine companion who will enthusiastically accompany you on your adventures, Barney is a dog that you should consider. Sure, he's been living in a shelter for several years, but that has never impacted his zest for life. For that reason alone, he is a dog that should be living in a home.
