Baldwin (JA26-38)'s Story

**My adoption fee has been generously sponsored!**

Meet Baldwin!

Some dogs spend their lives knowing kindness. Baldwin is still learning what it feels like.

This sweet senior Beagle/Shar Pei mix was found surviving along the roadsides of the Rio Grande Valley in Texas, fending for himself for who knows how long. His body tells the story of a difficult past, but his heart is still quietly hopeful. Day by day, Baldwin is learning that people can be trusted, gentle hands can bring comfort, and home is more than just a place-it's a feeling.

Baldwin enjoys the simple things in life: leisurely walks, exploring the yard with his nose to the ground, soft places to rest, and the company of calm, easygoing dogs. He's even beginning to discover the joy of toys. Because he's still learning to trust, he can be startled by sudden movements and needs a patient family who will let him build confidence at his own pace. A home without young children, or with children 12 years and older, will be the best fit for him.

Baldwin is looking for a hospice adoption-not because his story is ending, but because he deserves to spend every chapter ahead surrounded by love, comfort, and the security of a family.

He is living with heartworm disease, chronic skin issues, and early signs of cognitive decline. Due to his overall health and neurological symptoms, NMDR's veterinary team has chosen the slow-kill method to treat his heartworm disease. His adopter must be committed to following his treatment plan and partnering with NMDR to support his ongoing care.

The good news is you won't be navigating this journey alone. NMDR is committed to supporting Baldwin throughout his life and will cover medical expenses, within reason, that are directly related to his pre-existing conditions, as recommended by our veterinary team. His family should be prepared for ongoing medications, follow-up appointments, and the changes that may come with age, while working closely with NMDR to ensure he remains as healthy and comfortable as possible.

Hospice adoption isn't about counting the days-it's about making the days count. If you have room in your heart for a dog who asks for little more than patience, kindness, and a soft place to land, Baldwin is waiting to meet you.
------
Many NMDR dogs have had limited prior socialization and may need time, patience, and support as they adjust to home life. Skills such as house training, leash walking, and handling may require continued practice. Progress will vary by individual dog. Homes with older children are often a good fit, depending on temperament. To learn more about NMDR and our adoption process, please visit our website.

National Mill Dog Rescue's Adoption Policy
At NMDR, we use a welcoming, conversation-based adoption process! We look at every applicant as a partner, offering honest education about our dogs' needs so you can make the best choice for your lifestyle. We generally do not deny adoptions based solely on yard size, housing type, adopter age, or having other pets. Because many of our dogs are rescued from commercial breeding facilities, we maintain a few firm safety and mission-aligned policies: Spay/Neuter Requirement: To help end the cycle of irresponsible breeding, all resident dogs in your home must be spayed or neutered. Homes with Children: Many of our dogs had limited socialization before rescue. Older kids are often a great match! Homes with younger children are considered individually based on the dog’s needs and the adopter’s experience with home management. Companions Only: Our dogs are adopted strictly as indoor family companions. Out-of-State Adopters: You are welcome to apply, but you must travel directly to the specific shelter housing the dog (in CO or MO) to complete the adoption. We do not ship or transport dogs. A Supportive Safety Net: Life is unpredictable, and sometimes a match isn't perfect. We discuss long-term safety nets with all adopters, and if a placement doesn't work out, we welcome our dogs back with zero judgment. Fees: Adoption fees vary by age and directly offset the extensive veterinary care, dental work, and rehabilitation each dog receives before adoption. Ready to meet your new best friend?
