Baby's Story

Baby - 8 months, 40bs (as of 4/30) Lab/Shep Mix, Spayed
Expected Full Grown Size Around 50lbs

This puppy is eligible to join our foster-to-adopt program. Please email fostertoadopt@socialteesnyc.org with the animal's name in the subject line if you are interested! Want to straight up adopt? Submit an adoption application at socialteesnyc.org

Our Team Says: We aren't exactly sure of her breed - she was rescued from Kosovo. She has this amazing soft fur - right now she's shaved down but she's actually got double coated fur.

Their Foster Parent Says: "Writing about Baby AKA Babybel is hard - like physically very difficult - because I want to keep one hand petting her soft ears and belly at all times! She is a 40 pound snuggle bug who is so ready to be the center of her family's world! She is ready to walk and play and be a puppy and then rest and be pet and snuggle until dinner! She is an absolute angel with our 4 year-old daughter who likes to use her as a pillow while she watches TV. One of her favorite pastimes is playing with her toys in the garden and I think she will be a great fetcher!"

Level of dog ownership experience required:
INTERMEDIATE – As an adult, this dog will need significant structure and plenty of daily exercise, training, and mental stimulation – 90 consecutive minutes of movement in the morning plus potty break walks and brain games throughout the day. The adopter must have relevant primary care experience with a similar breed, temperament, and/or energy level. (Primary care experience includes ownership, fostering, or dog sitting as an adult, not a dog you grew up with.) Relevant puppy care experience is a huge plus, but bare minimum the adopter must have TONS of time and patience. Raising a puppy can be a lot of fun, but it's also tremendous work. Puppies' personalities and exercise/stimulation requirements change dramatically between now and when they're a year old as their bodies and brains develop, so an active lifestyle and the ability to adapt to a pup's evolving needs are a must. We strongly urge professional dog training with a rewards based trainer from the get go. Adults only or kids ages 8 and up – all puppies go through a mouthy, rambunctious phase and often accidentally hurt children when playing. PLEASE DO YOUR OWN BREED RESEARCH to make sure you have a better understanding of the kind of temperament and exercise requirements this dog may have as an adult.

Energy level:
MEDIUM – Needs a daily 60-90 minute morning walk or window of quick paced exercise in addition to potty break strolls (10-30 min each). Also needs significant opportunities to socialize outside the home and mental stimulation at home like tricks training practice, chew items, and puzzle toys. (This is regardless of dog size – many small breeds were designed for lots of activity and will exhibit unwanted behavior when they're understimulated.)

TOLERANCE TO CITY:
Babybel isn't disturbed by the particular sounds of the city but is quite sensitive to sounds and new people at nighttime. I'm calling her "afraid of the dark". She is not spooked so much by car sounds or city hustle and bustle although I do believe a quieter urban neighborhood or the suburbs would be a better fit.

POTTY TRAINING
Working on it - Still doesn't pee or poop on walks but she is 89% there with the backyard. Occasional accidents at night when she is over-excited/stimulated.

COMFORT LEVEL WITH STRANGERS- Babybel is a total sweetheart who loves to be pet or cuddled by everyone she meets and she is generally very polite about it! She does get quite nervous at night and DOES NOT like people she meets at night - she will bark pretty incessantly and, although we have managed to overcome this with our guests who stayed multiple days, she remembers and is nervous around them for quite some time.

Social with dogs?
Good with most other dogs. She is excited to be around other dogs and (I believe) needs slightly more socialization than I am currently able to provide. She is playful with my dog and learning boundaries there. On walks she is excitable and jumpy when we pass other dogs but I believe this is stemming from some stage combination of my own dog and her together and she hasn't done this as much on solo walks.

Social with children? (ALWAYS requires adult supervision)
Yes for most ages -- SHE IS AN AMAZING DOG FOR KIDS and our daughter is absolutely in love. She is patient and tolerant and has shown zero signs of aggression towards any children. She is, however, still learning that she's a big girl and benefits from occasional reminders not to jump on people sitting on the couch. Also Barbies beware - she is a chewer!

Social with cats? She seems good with other animals but I have not seen her with them often.

MOUTHY BEHAVIOR
Working on it – Is respectful of hands, feet, etc. but likes to chew on things they're not supposed to like shoes, furniture, etc. She's definitely still in the puppy chewing phase and almost always has something in her mouth. Luckily she is easily redirected towards her own toys/treats and learning quickly.

SEPARATION ANXIETY
Adjusting – Babybel does very well being left alone in her crate. I sometimes play calming music or give her a kong to play with while she's alone but she's also fine without these things.

LEASH MANNERS
WTF is a leash – this is currently one of our bigger focuses for her. As her walks get longer and longer, I have no doubt she will improve but she is sometimes more like a young horse or a kangaroo than a dog on walks....but in a cute way :)

CUDDLE BUG LEVEL
Between medium and high, she loves snuggles and affection, but she's also pretty independent and will go for the occasional nap in her crate on her own too.

JUMPING ON PEOPLE TO SAY HELLO
She's very good about not jumping to greet and rarely needs corrections. (This does not apply to greeting other dogs...)
Listens to correction – Only jumps on people they know when really excited, stops with correction.

CRATE TRAINING
Yep/mostly – Babybel is great in the crate and we leave her there consistently when she is home alone and occasionally at night nearby us if she needs to chill a bit more (otherwise she likes to sleep in our bed).

Medical status:
Healthy as far as we know. Up to date on their DHPP and Bordetella vaccines, spayed/neutered; microchipped; treated with dewormer upon intake. (For dogs under 4 months old, adopters will need to finish the DHPP vaccine series and administer the Rabies vaccine at 16 weeks of age.)

How did this dog end up with Social Tees?
Most of our dogs come via partner groups who help us save them from shelters where they are at risk of euthanasia in Tennessee, Los Angeles, and Puerto Rico. There are very few spay/neuter resources there and many more animals in those areas than there are people to adopt them. Rescue groups like ours bring them to the northeast where the desire for pets like these allows us to save their lives.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot guarantee any breed mix, exact age, or full grown size (if the dog is under a year old). We do our best with very educated guesses.

This animal is not at the Social Tees office, all are in foster homes.

LEARN MORE ABOUT US: socialteesnyc.org and Instagram @socialteesnyc
