Axel - Foster or Adopt's Story

Axel, 5 yr old silver lab, 91 lbs, neutered is available for Adoption (or Foster)

Background:
Axel was owner-surrendered to Antioch Animal Services and is now looking for a fresh start with a home that can match his size, energy, and big-hearted personality.

What Axel's Foster Says:
Axel is a sweet, affectionate and playful dog. He loves to be around people and will shower you with kisses if you so desire. He is energetic and loves to play. His favorite activity is racing around our yard retrieving tennis balls. He knows some basic commands, such as “sit” and is working on voice recall. Axel doesn’t seem to have received much leash training and is working on his leash manners. He doesn’t get too excited by squirrels or other dogs, but he does like to pull along towards whatever interests him.

Axel generally gets along well with our two male labs but has had some standoffs with them. This may be due to the fact that he is a bigger dog and also that he moved into our house right after being neutered. He would do best in a house with no other pets, where he would get the attention he needs and gradually improve his socialization skills.

Axel is well-mannered indoors. He is housebroken and heads to the door when he needs to go out. He’s been sleeping in a kennel and readily goes in his kennel when it’s time for bed. He hasn’t jumped up on our furniture or done any counter surfing, although he is very present by the table at dinner time.

Axel will make a great addition to a family that can give him the attention and supplemental training that he needs. We really enjoy having him with our family but ongoing disagreements with our older lab (driven mainly by our dog) have made it clear that he would be better off in a different living situation.

What Axel's Rescue Rep Says:
Axel is a 5-year-old silver Labrador Retriever who makes an enthusiastic first impression greeting you right away with excitement and friendliness. He is a people-oriented dog who truly enjoys human interaction and will offer his paw and lean in for more attention, especially enjoying head and chest rubs.

Axel will need a home committed to providing regular exercise and engagement. He is especially motivated by tennis balls and clearly lights up when it’s time to play—fetch is definitely his favorite activity. A home with a secure backyard where he can run and play would be ideal.

He does need some basic training and continued structure, but he is eager to please and responds well to both treats and attention. On leash, he will benefit from additional training. While not an extreme puller, his size means leash manners will be important for safe and enjoyable walks.

Because of his size and enthusiastic nature, Axel would do best in a home with older children who can comfortably interact with an energetic dog. Axel is not a good candidate for dog parks or off leash play with other dogs and would do best as the only dog in the home. That said, he could be a loving, loyal companion who will thrive with an active family willing to provide structure, consistency, and plenty of outlets for his energy. With the right home, Axel has all the potential to become a wonderful, well-rounded family dog.

Medical:

Axel is in good health, is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccines and heartworm negative.

Axel is location in: Orinda

If you are interested in Axel, please email Rescue Rep Kathy at ksmillich@gmail.com In your email, please tell me about yourself and why you would be a good fit for Axel.

Axel enjoying some attention: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31IdYgCSqRI&feature=youtu.be

Axel playing fetch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMHzP6yzylA&feature=youtu.be

Axel taking treats - https://youtu.be/ZlXOhjARPNU

Axel playing with another dog - https://youtu.be/U4qdUWK1PyA

Axel walking - https://youtu.be/C6icwTUWuwk

Axel playing - https://youtu.be/g7KiVNo2I3I
