Available for Adoption - Troy (IL, USA)'s Story
Socialization: Troy is a friendly, easy going boy who is happy to meet new people! He is comfortable around men, women and children. He greets new friends with plenty of tail wags without getting overly excited. Troy has a particularly sweet way of showing affection-he will gently crawl up your leg, wrap his paws around you as if he's giving you a hug, and rest his head against you. He isn't skittish around unfamiliar people and seems to genuinely enjoy making new friends and soaking up affection. Troy lives with 3 resident dogs and has met and played with other dogs.

Training: So far in his foster home, Troy has proven to be a well-behaved and well-manned boy. He knows his name and 'sit", and he sits nicely for treats-although he may try to cut in line when his foster siblings are getting theirs! He has good recall in the yard, coming when called and sitting in front of that person. Troy is potty trained and has been trustworthy enough to have free roam of the house with the resident dogs when his foster family is away. He has not chewed on shoes or furniture and is happy to play and chew on toys when home alone or nap! He counter surfed a few times during his initial week in foster care. He may need an occasional reminder that counter surfing is not a good choice! As with any dog transitioning to a new home, his behaviors and routines may change as he adjusts to a new environment, but these are the behaviors that Troy has shown while in foster care.

Activity requirements: Troy is a medium-energy dog, with a wonderful balance between being active and chill! He falls between the constant zoomies type and the professional couch potato! Troy loves spending time outside with the dogs, whether playing chase, patrolling the yard for squirrels, or simply lying in the the grass with a favorite toy. Inside, Troy is just as happy snuggling next to you on the sofa for pets as he is entertaining himself with toys. Troy believes there is no such thing as having too many toys out at once. We've tried and failed to teach him to put toys back into the basket! One of the nicest things about Troy is that he has an "off button". Around 7:30 each evening, after a day of playing and hanging out with his people and dog friends, he is ready to call it a day. He'll snooze until the final potty break of the night and then head upstairs, settle onto his dog bed, and sleep until morning. While in foster care, Troy has shown that he enjoys having opportunities to play and be active during the day but doesn't need to be constantly entertained or on the go. Troy is working on his leash walking skills. He loves his walks but can pull to make sure he gets to smell every new scent he encounters.

Fence requirements: Troy enjoys having a fenced yard and being outside, so a fenced yard is required to adopt him. Our yard has a 4 foot chain link fence that backs up to an open area with plenty of tress and therefore plenty of squirrels to keep Troy interested. On occasion, he will put his front paws up on the fence, particularly when something on the other side catches his attention. He has responded to "no" and "off" but because he will still occasionally do it, I do not leave him outside unattended. I don't want to give him the opportunity to discover that he can climb or jump the fence. Like most dogs, I do think Troy would take advantage of an open gate, door or other opportunity to explore if given the chance, so his future family should be mindful of keeping gates secure and supervising him appropriately.

Personality: Troy is an equal opportunity lover and happily shares his affection with everyone in the house, including his three resident dog friends. He loves being outside, especially when his humans join him for some fun. Throwing a toy gets him excited, although Troy has decided that the retrieving portion of "fetch" is completely optional! And then there are Troy's hugs. His hugs have quickly become a favorite with everyone who meets him. Overall, Troy is a wonderful combination of being affectionate, playful, social and independent. He enjoys being part of the family without needing to be the center of attention every minute-unless of course, a pup cup is involved. In that case, all bets are off!

Health history: Troy is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm preventative and flea and tick preventative. He is a healthy boy with no known medical issues. His next leishmaniasis test is due April 2027.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster comments: Troy has been a dream foster and I have no doubt he is the dog some lucky family has been dreaming of. Troy is affectionate, loves his people time yet is comfortable chilling with furry friends. Troy is very particular with where he lays his head at night. He has decided that the dog bed closest to his human's bed is his spot, and he simply cannot settle for the night anywhere else. If one of the other dogs beats him to it, Troy will stand next to the "bed thief", whine and whimper, maybe let out tiny barks and pace around until they finally give up his spot! Once his bed is reclaimed all is right in the world and he settles down for the night. I would love to see Troy in a home where he is truly part of the family. He has done wonderfully living with other dogs and genuinely enjoys their company, so I think he would be very happy with a canine sibling with a similar disposition to hang out with. At the same time, Troy has so much love to give his humans and deserves a family who will include him in everyday life, give him plenty of affection, and appreciate the sweet, gentle, funny personality that has made him an easy dog to love. Whoever gets to call him theirs is going to be incredibly lucky!

Foster location: Schaumburg, IL

Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight to get their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
