Socialization: Rivian is another one of our sweet pointer puppies at the Rescue Ranch! She can be very shy when meeting new people, especially men, and can take her time to warm up. With some love and gaining trust, she comes around and becomes your best friend. She has been around my son who has just turned 1 and loved him! She was licking giving him kisses and snuggling up next to him. Rivian does do well with other dogs, but she can be selective, as she is very dominant and can be a little pushy at times. With guided introductions and time to acclimate, she is perfectly fine with other dogs. I think she would do well in a home with a male dog or a submissive female. I personally do not think that Rivian would be best suited in a home with a cat, possibly with a slow introduction and time to acclimate to them. <br/><br/>Training: We have been working on basic obedience with Rivian. She is nailing sit currently! She is highly treat motivated and eager to learn. She does jump up and counter surf sometimes, but we are working on that and she is getting better and better by the day. She should be crated when left alone for her safety and for peace of mind, at least for the first few months so she can get a feel for her surroundings. She is getting very good at going to the kennel door when she needs to go to the bathroom and her kennel is always clean when we come in!<br/><br/>Activity requirements: Rivian is an energetic puppy. Leash walking would benefit her, one or two good long walks a day would keep her happy and mentally stimulated. She does love Kongs filled with peanut butter and it keeps her distracted and busy! Rivian is very good on the leash. She is currently learning heel and how to loose leash walk. She tends to want to play tag a lot, which can make it difficult while luring her back inside!<br/><br/>Fence requirements: A physical fence would be ideal for her, but she can likely be trained to an invisible fence. She would also do well without a fenced yard if her adopter would be able to give her at least one good long walk per day to burn off her energy. Dog parks are not a good option for her, as she is more dominant and needs to warm up to other dogs first.<br/><br/>Personality: Rivian is a goofy girl. She can be stubborn at times and a little bit sassy but is overall a sweetheart. Rivian loves to play tag and run out in the yard playing with her toys. She loves rope toys, and Kongs specifically. She is very shy at first but is very cuddly and social once she warms up. She may need a slow intro to any dogs already in the home.<br/><br/>Health history: Kia is a healthy puppy, she is spayed, up to date on vaccines, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Her next leish test will be due in November 2026.<br/><br/>This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.<br/><br/>Foster comments: Rivian is an adorable and beautiful pointer puppy. She is very clever is always the suspicious one when it comes to going into the kennel at night! Any family would be lucky to have this beautiful girl!<br/><br/>Foster location: Kalamazoo, MI<br/><br/>Guardian Angels: The typical adoption fee for our dogs is $490, however, Rivian has $340 of her adoption fee covered by a donation through our Guardian Angel program! As a result, her adoption fee is $150. Read more about our Guardian Angel program here: https://givebutter.com/s34cU4<br/><br/>Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight for getting their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
