Available for Adoption - Coco (MI, USA)'s Story

Socialization: Coco is a very sweet but very shy girl. She loves other dogs but obviously has been unkindly treated by humans because she shies away from people she doesn't know and takes quite a while to get comfortable with you. Once she knows you, she follows you everywhere and wants to be close to you. Coco initially came into rescue very shy, but she has blossomed while in the care of our team at the Rescue Ranch! She is opening up and is friendly and playful. She may be a bit shy when meeting new people, just need to give her some time to settle in. She is a more submissive dog. NO CATS! CoCo has a high prey drive and loves to chase birds and butterflies all day. She is NOT cat safe.

Training: Currently Coco has a room at the Rescue Ranch. She doesn't love it, and often lets the staff know. She has not shown to be destructive. She would probably do best with someone who works at home or doesn't leave her for long hours at a time. She is well behaved in the house (except for counter-surfing) and is doing well with her housetraining. She does still have occasional accidents, but she will always pee on a potty pad if one is available. She has had accidents in her room at the Ranch, but with time and patience in a home, she should easily learn.

Activity requirements: Coco will need a home with a fenced yard so she can run daily and hunt and point birds and butterflies. She has not been leash walked, but I would think she would be able to be trained. Even though she is 5 (vet thinks she may be closer to 8), Coco needs access to run off her energy each day - at least an hour of being outside, multiple times per day.

Fence requirements: A physical fence will be required for CoCo. Leash walking will not be enough for her. There is no height requirement. An invisible fence is not a good option for her.

Personality: Coco is a favorite at the Ranch - although they all are! She is sweet and kind. She continues to gain confidence every day. I would think there would be some regression when she finds her new home, but as long as her family is patient and caring, she will blossom. She is a sweet soul!

Health history: Coco came to us severely malnourished and in terrible condition. It has taken months for her to recover and get to a healthy weight, but physically, she is now doing very well. With love and patience we are seeing her blossom. She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. Her next Leishmaniasis test is due April 2027.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster comments: Coco is a kind and sweet girl that will need a home with a lot of love and patience. Yes, she is beautiful, but she has been treated unkindly in her past and will need someone that is willing to be patient and earn her trust. We hope for a home with humans that won't leave her for long periods of time and will give her the time and space to continue to blossom! The ideal family would be within driving distance of the Ranch and willing to meet a volunteer or pick her up at the Ranch.

Foster location: Delton, MI

Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight to get their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
