Available for Adoption - Benz (NC, USA)'s Story
Socialization: Benz is initially shy when meeting new people and dogs but within about 5 minutes he is ok and will walk alongside new dogs and people. He is good with the 7 other dogs (1 is a littermate) at his foster home and does well with new dogs after he has been around them a few minutes. He can seem dominant when meeting a new dog but that changes once he realizes the new dog isn't a threat to him. He ignores the cat and doesn't chase her.

Training: Benz is good in the house, he is housebroken. He is also good in a crate when foster mom is gone. He does respond to his name when called. Foster mom is currently working with a trainer to make him less afraid when meeting new people and dogs. His adopter will also have to continue working with him to help build his confidence.

Activity requirements: He loves walks and goes on 1-2 long walks daily and is good on a leash. He also plays with his sister in back yard and in the house. He does well in the fenced yard and likes being outside if weather is nice. He also loves being inside with foster mom.

Fence requirements: A fence would be ideal as he is not a good candidate for dog parks. An invisible fence may also be a good option for him.

Personality: Benz is affectionate and does like being hugged and cuddled. He most enjoys being inside with foster mom and his sister.

Health history: He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next leish test is due in November 2026. He has no known health issues.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster comments: Benz is a wonderful dog who will continue to gain confidence as he gets older and becomes more sure of himself. When he arrived, he was definitely the more scared of the 2 pups (his sister Mercedes is very outgoing and confident). Benz will make a great companion to a person or family looking for a dog who has a winning personality, great looks and a sweet temperament.

Foster location: Durham, NC

Guardian Angels: The typical adoption fee for our dogs is $490, however, Benz has $250 of his adoption fee covered by a donation from the Nikolich Family and another donation of $90 through our Guardian Angel program! As a result, his adoption fee is $150. Read more about our Guardian Angel program here: https://givebutter.com/s34cU4

Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight for getting their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.
