Available for Adoption - Benz (NC, USA)'s Story

Socialization: Benz is shy when meeting new people and dogs, but has warmed up quickly once he feels comfortable. He will need to adjust to a new living situation, so his new home will have to be patient and give him lots of love. Benz can be a little dominant with some dogs and I think he is a little fearful. He's young and learning how to interact and play. He's 1 of 9 dogs in his foster home and does well with all of them. He has appeared overly interested in the cat, so he might chase a cat but if a cat was used to dogs it might work with some training. To be safe I'd say no cats but he's co-existed with a foster home that had a cat for a month and the cat does disappear when she doesn't want to be bothered.

Training: Benz knows his name and comes when called He's good in house but I supervise him because he's still a pup and may chew woodwork, so I watch him. He's good in a crate and stays there when foster mom is gone and overnight. He may try to countersurf so he's still learning to keep his paws on the ground.

Activity requirements: He loves walks and running/playing in yard with sister Mercedes. Between the walks and play with other dogs, he gets plenty of exercise. He likes to chase balls.

Fence requirements: A fence would be ideal but if a home was committed to exercising him via leash walks it could work as well. An invisible fence may also be a good option for him.

Personality: Benz is a very nice boy! He has steadily gained confidence in foster home. He does love attention and is playful and also cuddly.

Health history: He is neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and on monthly heartworm prevention. His next leish test is due in November 2026. He has no known health issues.

This dog originates from Greece where Leishmaniasis is endemic. They tested negative before coming to the USA, but the parasite can remain dormant in the system for many years, so potential adopters must be willing to commit to annual testing for the next 7 years. Typically, the test needs to be sent to a special lab, but any regular vet can draw the blood and send it to the lab. The cost of the test seems to vary widely by area, but is approximately $150-$250. or if your vet is willing to send the test to a veterinary college lab, cost can be as low as $80.

Foster comments: An ideal home will love Benz and be committed to giving him a great life!

Foster location: Durham, NC

Guardian Angels: The typical adoption fee for our dogs is $490, however, Benz has $250 of his adoption fee covered by a donation from the Nikolich Family and another donation of $90 through our Guardian Angel program! As a result, her adoption fee is $150. Read more about our Guardian Angel program here: https://givebutter.com/s34cU4

Transport note: We are able to arrange volunteer transport to get dogs from their foster home to their adopter as long as the adopter and the foster are within a 1,000 mile radius of each other and the adopter is located in the USA. If the adopter is more than 1,000 miles from the foster home, adoption would only be possible if the adopter is willing to drive the distance beyond the 1,000-mile transport limit. Long distance adoptions may also be possible if the adopter is willing to pay for a flight for getting their dog from the foster home to their location if the foster feels this is an appropriate arrangement for the specific dog. Canadian adopters would have to drive into the USA to pick up their dog, as we do not transport outside of the USA.

We then do a virtual home visit so we can see the home and yard for the dog. Our board votes on the applicant once everything has been completed.
