Ava's Story
MEET AVA — A TINY GIRL WITH A BIG HEART WHO JUST NEEDS SOMEONE TO BELIEVE IN HER!

Some dogs come into rescue ready to shower everyone with kisses. Others, like Ava, have never known what it means to feel safe. For these special souls, love must be earned through patience, kindness, and trust.

Meet Ava, an adorable 5-year-old, 7-pound red Miniature Pinscher mix who has survived more than any little dog should ever have to endure.

Ava was rescued from a heartbreaking hoarding and neglect situation in Kentucky, where more than 200 dogs were removed from a property. Many had never experienced proper socialization, veterinary care, or the comforts of a loving home.

For Ava, the world has been a frightening place, and she is still learning that people can be kind.

A LITTLE GIRL LEARNING TO TRUST
Ava is a fear biter. When frightened or threatened, her instinct is to defend herself by biting. This isn't a dog being mean. This is a little girl who has learned that protecting herself is the only way to survive.
When Ava first arrived in her foster home, she was so terrified that it took several weeks before her foster mom could safely take her outside. She needed time to observe her surroundings and discover that no one was going to hurt her.
And slowly, something beautiful began to happen.
Ava started to trust!

Once Ava decides you're one of her safe people, she becomes a devoted little companion! She wants to be right by your side, whether you're cooking dinner, washing dishes, or simply going about your day. Beneath that frightened exterior is a sweet, loyal little dog who desperately wants someone to love.

Ava is still a work in progress. Handling her collar, putting on a harness, or dressing her in sweaters or coats can trigger defensive nipping. She also has some scarring in her right eye that appears to affect her vision. We don't know what happened to Ava before she was rescued, but we know she deserves a future filled with compassion.

One of Ava's interesting habits is finding the highest spot she can perch on, indoors or outside. We suspect this developed from years of feeling the need to constantly watch for danger. How heartbreaking is that?

AVA'S PERFECT FOREVER HOME
Ava isn't the right dog for everyone, and that's okay! We're looking for HER perfect home — one with the patience and understanding to help her continue healing.
Adult-only home REQUIRED. Because Ava may bite when frightened, she cannot be placed with children.
Another friendly dog REQUIRED. Ava does well with other dogs, and a canine companion will help her feel secure.
Completely secure fenced yard REQUIRED. Ava is a serious flight risk and can wiggle out of her harness. There must be absolutely no escape routes.
Experience with fearful dogs preferred. Ava needs someone who respects her boundaries and allows her to decompress at her own pace. A large wire crate may provide a safe space where she can observe her surroundings.
Patience with housetraining. Ava is crate trained and has made encouraging progress, but she's still learning.
A calm, predictable environment. Ava needs a family that celebrates small victories and never rushes her progress.
Ava is also good with cats!

THE REWARD IS WORTH THE WAIT
There is something incredibly special about earning the trust of a dog who has every reason to be afraid.

The first time she chooses to sit beside you. The first time she relaxes because she knows she's safe. The moment she realizes that you're her person.
Those moments are priceless.

Ava may never be the dog who happily greets strangers or enjoys being cuddled by everyone she meets. But to the person who earns her trust, she has the potential to become the most faithful little sidekick imaginable.

Ava doesn't need someone to fix her. She needs someone willing to understand her, protect her, and love her exactly where she is in her journey.
After everything this tiny girl has survived, wouldn't it be wonderful if the rest of her life could be filled with peace, security, and love?

AVA'S ADOPTION DETAILS
Breed: Miniature Pinscher Mix
Age: 5 years
Weight: 7 pounds
Gender: Spayed Female
Good with Dogs: Yes — another dog required
Good with Cats: Yes
Good with Children: No
Crate Trained: Yes
Housetraining: In progress
Secure Fenced Yard: Required

Location: Canton, Ohio
Adoption Fee: $400

Ava is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm negative.

READY TO GIVE AVA THE SECOND CHANCE SHE DESERVES?
If you have experience with fearful dogs, a calm adult-only household, a friendly resident dog, and a secure fenced yard, Ava just might be waiting for YOU!

Apply to adopt at:
www.sophiasgracefoundation.org
