Ava's Story

Ava

Meet Ava 🐾

Ava is a petite, pretty German Shepherd mix, estimated to be 7–8 years old and about 55 pounds of pure heart. She’s looking for her forever home: a calm, loving place where she can finally settle in and be cherished the way she deserves.

Her Personality: Ava is an absolute sweetheart. She’s affectionate, eager to please, and treat-motivated, making her a joy to work with. She loves people and thrives on snuggles and belly rubs. When it comes to toys, she’s a girl with taste: stuffed animals, balls, and squeaky toys are her favorites (fair warning — stuffed animals may not survive long, but your furniture is safe!). She’s gentle, calm, and not a destructive dog by any means.

Her Training: Ava is housebroken, crate-trained, and walks well on a leash without much pulling. She has excellent recall both indoors and in the yard and learns new things quickly. Like many dogs, she can be reactive toward other dogs on leash, so she’d thrive with a patient adopter who understands this. She is very comfortable with a muzzle and her foster has used it as a precaution on walks while she is settling. She does whimper briefly when her person leaves, but settles quickly.

Her Story: Ava’s past hasn’t been easy, and she deserves the world for everything she’s been through. She was found at Carson Animal Care Center — a high-intake kill shelter in Los Angeles — not once, but twice. The first time, her elderly owners were no longer able to care for her. The second time, she’d been struck by a car and found as a stray, with no one coming to claim her. Despite it all, Ava’s spirit remains warm, trusting, and full of love.

Her Health: Ava has hip dysplasia, arthritis, and a fracture from her accident, and she was also found to have a tick-borne illness (Ehrlichia) that had gone untreated for years. The good news? She is now getting medical care. She’s currently being treated with antibiotics for the Ehrlichia, and she will be receiving hip surgery before going to her forever home so she can start this next chapter as healthy and comfortable as possible. Her bloodwork is excellent, and imaging confirms she is otherwise in great health and ready to thrive.
Because of her hip and leg challenges, Ava is looking for a home with minimal stairs — though her foster can confirm she moves around happily and can walk and run with enthusiasm! You’d never know she has these issues, and they will soon be much better with surgery!

A Note From Her Foster Ava’s foster wants every potential adopter to know: Ava is an incredible, kind dog who has met every hardship in her life with gentleness and grace. She deserves a forever home that will love her deeply and recognize just how truly special she is.
