Austin's Story

Meet Austin: A Sweet, Gentle Soul for the Right Home

Age: 8 years old
Breed: Alaskan Malamute / Siberian Husky mix
Gender: Male (Neutered)
Weight: Large
Compatibility: No cats, no small pets, no young children

Austin is a wonderfully sweet, affectionate, and loyal 8-year-old Red Malamute/Husky mix who is looking for a patient, experienced adopter. While he can be a little cautious when meeting new people, once Austin knows and trusts you, he is an incredibly loving companion who actively seeks affection and delights in face-licking his favorite humans and canine friends.

Personality & Household Manners

Unlike some high-energy northern breeds, Austin has a wonderful "off switch." He is not a constant pacer; he is perfectly content resting on his bed or the floor, watching the daily household activities, and just being part of the family. He enjoys treats and is reasonably food-motivated, but he is polite and does not constantly beg.

Austin is fully crate-trained and has excellent bathroom control while crated. He is comfortable resting and sleeping in a standard wire crate. Adopters should note that Austin possesses a beautiful, classic, and very expressive Malamute voice. He will happily "sing" or howl when he is excited, anticipates a walk, or wants to greet you when you come home.

Dog & Animal Compatibility

Austin currently lives successfully with his brother and two other large resident dogs. He is relaxed around his familiar canine pack, and they can eat within sight of one another without issue. He could potentially live with another compatible medium-to-large dog, provided they are given careful, slow introductions.

However, Austin has a very strong prey drive. He reacts intensely to squirrels on walks and is not safe around cats. He must go to a strictly cat-free and small-animal-free home.

Ideal Home Environment

Because Austin is a large, powerful dog with specific breed traits, he needs an experienced handler who understands northern breeds. His perfect home matches the following criteria:

• Adult-Only Household: Austin is uncomfortable with fast-approaching young children. He requires an adult-only home or one with older, dog-experienced teenagers who respect his boundaries.

• Detached Home: Due to his occasional enthusiastic howling and singing, a detached single-family home is required so he does not disturb shared-wall neighbors.

• Securely Fenced Yard: Austin loves spending time outside enjoying his surroundings. He requires a secure, fenced backyard with supervision.

• Physical Strength: Austin can walk nicely on a leash when relaxed, but he will lunge forcefully if he sees a squirrel. His handler must be physically capable of safely managing his strength.

• Patience and Routine: Austin thrives on a consistent daily routine of exercise, enrichment, and quiet time. He needs a patient family willing to let him approach strangers at his own pace and continue positive-reinforcement training.

Austin is the perfect balance of a loyal companion who loves his walks and outdoor time, and a calm household partner who excels at relaxing. If you have experience with large northern breeds and can provide the structured, loving home Austin needs, he will reward you with endless affection and devotion.

Austin is currently fostered in Renton, WA but transportation to WA or OR is potentially available. Please inquire for further details.

Please fill out the adoption application at the below link.

https://www.hollywoodhuskies.org/adopt
