We are officially opening applications for the Australian Shepherd puppies currently in our care. These little ones are growing, learning, and beginning to show us who they are as individuals... and as always, our goal is to place them in homes where they will thrive for the rest of their lives.<br/> <br/><br/>A few important notes about this adoption process:<br/><br/>Applications will be for the litter as a whole, not for a specific puppy.<br/><br/>We know it is easy to fall in love with a particular color or coat pattern. They are undeniably adorable. However, we do not place puppies based on appearance. Instead, we match families with puppies based on temperament, lifestyle, and long-term compatibility. As we continue to observe the litter and get to know their personalities, we will carefully pair each puppy with the home that best suits their needs.<br/><br/>This litter truly has the full spectrum of personalities.<br/><br/>Some of these pups are already showing signs of being laid-back, cuddly companions who will happily curl up in a lap after a good play session. Others are showing that classic Aussie spark... bright, busy minds and the potential to grow into enthusiastic sport or working partners. Our responsibility is to make sure each puppy lands where they will be understood and appreciated for exactly who they are.<br/><br/>Because of this, we will give preference to:• Families with prior herding breed experience<br/>• Local families who are able and willing to continue training here at Green Dogs Unleashed<br/>• Homes committed to lifelong learning and enrichment for these very intelligent dogs<br/><br/>Australian Shepherds are incredible companions, but they are also thoughtful, driven working dogs who require guidance, structure, and engagement.<br/><br/>It is also important to note that all Green Dogs Unleashed dogs are required to be trained using positive reinforcement methods. We do not allow aversive tools or training techniques. Our program is built on science-based, kindness-only training that strengthens the relationship between dog and human while helping dogs learn to make good choices.<br/><br/>We understand that the matching process can sometimes feel difficult when you have your heart set on a particular look. But please know that every decision we make is guided by one simple principle: the long-term success and wellbeing of these dogs.<br/><br/>The right puppy in the right home changes everything... and that is exactly what we are working to create.<br/><br/>Thank you to everyone who continues to support our mission and trust the process as we help these pups find the families they are meant for.<br/><br/>At Green Dogs Unleashed (GDU), we are dedicated to ensuring the successful placement of our dogs in loving, permanent homes. Over the years, we have seen an increasing number of returns due to behavioral issues that could have been prevented with the right support. A significant percentage of these returns involve out-of-area clients or those who have not completed training with GDU. To address this, positive reinforcement training with Green Dogs Unleashed is required as a condition for all adoptions.<br/><br/>Preference for this dog will be given to adopters who commit to signing up for and completing our six-week Canine 101 training class in person at our headquarters in Troy, VA. Secondary consideration will be given to a limited number of out-of-area adopters who agree to complete one private lesson with GDU, either in person or virtually, and attend a pre-approved positive reinforcement training class in their area.<br/><br/>At the time you are seeing this post, this dog is still available for adoption. This minimum fee includes DAPP, rabies if age appropriate,, heartworm test and preventative, if age appropriate, and flea and tick treatment, as well as neutering or spaying, if the animal is medically sound to undergo surgery. In an attempt to avoid tummy upset from a sudden change of food, the foster family may include a small, transitional bag of the food the dog/puppy has been eating. And if the dog/puppy has grown attached to a special item (like a toy or blanket), they may send that along, as well.<br/><br/>*/*/* Young puppies will receive age-appropriate vaccines, and will be spayed/neutered prior to adoption. Adopters may be required to provide additional puppy boosters and at 16 weeks of age, a rabies vaccine.
