Augie's Story
MARR covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Wisconsin. Augie is being fostered in IA currently. However, transportation is available for adoptions within our coverage area.

Augie is spending some time with me for deeper evaluation and some behavior modification.

Augie was surrendered by his owner due to a divorce. He spent some time in a foster home prior to coming to me here at DC, but due to some inconsistency with the information we received when he was surrendered, he ended up not being a good fit for that foster home.

Augie is possibly the most handsome dog I have ever met; his eyes look deep into your soul and its almost as if he knows what you are thinking. He connects very well with people that he knows, and is very loyal to his trusted humans.

He is a BIG guy, quite tall and weighing in around 115 pounds. Although he is physically quite large, he is moderate to low on the energy scale and actually walks quite well on a leash. We have been working with him here with the Sidekick leash and he has responded beautifully with that.

He thoroughly enjoys being outside with his human, and enjoys a number of games, including tug, fetch, playing with a golf cart tire, and his favorite toys are that and jolly balls.

He equally enjoys lounging on the couch with stuffed toys or a chew bone. He also really likes raised dog beds. He enjoys treat puzzles and stuffed Kongs for enrichment as well.

Augies behavior modification here has included working on his reactivity to cars when out walking, and also working on his reactivity to other dogs near him and his space. He has made huge progress with both things and now rarely has a reaction to traffic and if he does, its very mild and easily redirected, and he has been able to parallel walk with other dogs with no reaction, while staying very relaxed and neutral. He has also made great progress were reactivity towards other dogs who he passes in kennels.

Augie is a bit shy, but warms up quickly to people, particularly when there is food involved. Augie has shown in the past that he is uncomfortable with small kids- their activity level and unpredictability makes him nervous, so older kids or adults are the best fit for this guy. He does fairly well at the vet, although he does have some handling sensitivities regarding his ears. He is muzzle training currently to make things a little less stressful for him at the vet, and to allow him to move forward with continuing his socialization with other dogs safely.

Although Augie does have some mild separation anxiety, he does kennel very well and can be kenneled in the event that there might be kids or other dogs visiting his home. He enjoys a bully stick or stuffed kong during those times. That also makes it feasible to board him in the event his adopter plans to travel.

Augie will continue his behavior modification program while he is here with me, and we will pair his adapter up with a trainer in their area to continue this once he is adopted.

Although Augie is not currently a good fit for a home with another dog (there is a possibility that could change with further behavior modification), the good news is that he is typically good with dog-savvy cats. Augie has lived with other cats multiple times.

Augie is ready to fall in love with his forever person and continue on his journey with someone who loves him as much as we do!
