Athena's Story

Meet Athena 💔

Athena is a 1.5-year-old American Bulldog mix whose short life has been filled with challenges no dog should ever have to face. When she was just a tiny puppy—only 2 to 3 months old—she and her sister were abandoned in the dead of winter, left outside in a box, starving and fighting to survive. By the time they were found, they were in critical condition. Athena barely made it.

She fought her way back, slowly gaining weight and strength, showing everyone just how much she wanted to live. But something wasn’t right—her skin remained painfully flaky and uncomfortable. Still, she kept going, hopeful for a fresh start. She was adopted, only to be returned when her medical needs became too overwhelming.

After finally seeing a specialist, Athena was diagnosed with Ichthyosis, a severe genetic skin condition common in American Bulldogs. It causes chronic scaling, flaking, and thick, greasy skin. There is no cure. Only lifelong management.

Through it all—the hunger, the cold, the discomfort, the heartbreak—Athena has never stopped loving.

She is gentle, resilient, and full of quiet affection. Despite everything she’s endured, she still looks to people with hope in her eyes, waiting for someone who won’t give up on her this time. Someone who will see past her condition and love her for the incredible, brave soul she is.

Athena was dealt a truly unfair hand in life. But she is still here, still fighting, and still so deserving of a home where she will be cherished unconditionally.

If you have room in your heart for a dog who needs a little extra care but will give you endless love in return, please consider Athena.

Apply to adopt Athena at: www.bigdogsdontcry.com
