Athena the 2 year old black Great Dane female was found chained in a backyard when family members went to do a welfare check on Athena's owner. It is unknown how long she was without food and water due to the owner being ill and hospitalized. Furthermore, she was pregnant and very malnourished when she was scooped up by Big Dogs Huge Paws Rescue and whisked off to a foster home experienced with caring for whelping mothers and providing care for the puppy mama while she is nursing and caring for her puppies. Athena has shared the things she has learned so far in life like what to do when you say come, stop, let’s eat, leave it and lay down. She is in a bustling foster home and knows where her food station and crate are. She will cuddle on the couch if you invite her up and she takes her snacks gently if you remind her. Athena does well in the crate and has not had any potty accidents in the house or crate. Her foster mom says that Athena is very sweet and loves people and other dogs as long as they don’t get in her face. As Athena's true personality emerges, we will update her information. She gave birth to 10 puppies on May 25th and is holding down the fort as chief cook and bottle washer for a litter of puppies now, but she would love to hang up her apron and come to live with you and have a couch to lay on, people to pet her and plenty of food and water in a few months.
