Arthur's Story

ARTHUR
1. Call your vet (right now), give them permission to speak with rescues when they call.
2. Read ALL of the below to learn everything about this dog.
3. Read our adoption process on our website (link below).
4. Fill out adoption application on our website (link below).
5. If you are a good fit for this dog and have quality vetting history, watch your email and answer your phone in the coming days. We move fast when it’s an obvious good match.
6. If you do not hear from us that means other apps are a better fit. We only reply to those we want to move forward with. Do not email asking why you haven’t heard from us. This is why.

MEET ARTHUR the PEKINGESE
North New Jersey
Arthur is a 10lb around 6 yo Pekingese and a little spit fire of a dude. He was SEVERELY neglected in his former home. He was marked a "cruelty" case and had severe fecal and urine scald (burns) on his entire tail, hind legs, bum area, his privates, and up his under carriage. We started treatment immediately and naturally he was reactive to being touched especially around his bum since it was so painful for him.

But through that process he quickly learned he could trust his foster mom. It has been a long road for this little guy but he is a loving little guy that wants to be with his person like a typical Peke. He has learned not to "react" with biting but the propensity is there and moving to a new home with new people will be scary for him. He needs time to decompress and learn the new routine and that he can trust the new human(s) in the home. There is no immediate grabbing, hugging, or kissing. Once he trusts you then he is the most affectionate little velcro guy. If he could he would be attached to his foster mommy's neck 24/7. Except for when he needs to police the yard from the garbage truck and post man.

He also has his ups and downs with the other small breed dogs in his foster home. There are those he ignores completely. Those he plays with and has a great time. And a few he deems worthy of trying to dominate and thus scuffles ensue. Therefore, a meet & greet with any existing pups in the home is a requirement. A safe bet would be confident friendly females and easy-going males, all at least a little bigger than him. You should be experienced and/or ok with a scuffle here or there. He does correct and has certain phrases that he knows and listens to well.

Given his history, there are no children in Arthur's future, they are too unpredictable. You would be putting those children at risk and you will be 100% liable. Our contract is iron clad and it will be extremely clear about his history and this particular point. If you have kids or grandkids that visit, Arthur is not the dog for you. He is a wonderful little companion for someone who lives alone and can respect the process of letting him decompress so he can learn you are his new person and he can trust you. He's been through enough and needs a consistent stable environment.

Arthur has been neutered and his burned scrotal skin was surgically removed, he had a dental, xrays, full blood work, allergy testing, brought UTD, and is HW negative. His skin has healed and his fur has grown back. He's had many groomings and he is now cooperative for them. He still gets a little jumpy around his private parts. Same at the vet, he is mostly a good boy but can be a little leery. He is housebroken for outside and also knows how to use potty pads if available.

In September 2025, he had his annual exam, xrays and full blood work, 4DX, etc. He is in perfect health!

This poor little guy has been through the ringer. He just wants to love someone and have someone love him back that he can trust will never hurt him again. He loves having a fenced yard he can police (and he is a very good guard dog for a 10 pounder :) and obviously this is the safest environment for him. So a yard would be our first choice for him although we will consider other scenarios on a case-by-case basis.

He is obviously not the dog for someone who wants to take him out and about to stores and visiting family and friends on a daily basis. We have those dogs so check out our website.

He is a special little guy that needs a special person and home situation so we will not be rushing to place him.

Arthur will only be placed within 60 miles of north New Jersey obviously because we expect to work with his new owner and be a resource.

Please note we do not reply to all applications we receive, unfortunately we do not have the bandwidth to do so. We only reply if we would like to move forward with your application and we will get in touch relatively quickly so please watch your email and answer your phone. Thank you very much in advance for your understanding!!

His adoption donation is $400.
(our rehab investment as of 1/15/26 is $1,257)

TO BE CONSIDERED, PLEASE FILL OUT OUR ADOPTION APPLICATION
We only process complete applications and providing false information immediately disqualifies you from adopting.
Adoption process: https://gingerbreaddogs.org/adopt-overview/
Adoption application: https://gingerbreaddogs.org/adopt-overview/adoption-application/

Please follow our Facebook page to see new dogs as they arrive and to keep up on the daily shenanigans:
https://www.facebook.com/gingerbreaddogs

ABOUT OUR PROCESS:
WE ONLY CONTACT APPLICANTS WITH WHOM WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD. We typically get in touch within 24-48 hours, but it may take up to 10 days. Please watch your email and answer your phone (from 201 area code) after you submit an application. Unfortunately, we do not have the manpower to reply to all applicants.

We also do not have the manpower to accept phone calls. Everything we know about the dog is posted above. Our adoption process is on our website. You can see more about our daily operations on our Facebook page.

PLEASE call your vet office right now and give them permission to speak with rescues if you are applying to adopt from any rescue. Ask them to mark your file. If they will not speak with us, we will move on to the next application and you will not be considered.

OUT-OF-AREA ADOPTIONS
We consider out-of-area adoptions on a case-by-case basis. All meet & greets and adoptions are held in north New Jersey, and we do not transport our pups. You must come to NJ. We also do not “hold” dogs. It is “first qualified, first come” and our expectation is you will move quickly to conduct the meet & greet if you are approved.

An approved application does not guarantee adoption of any dog from our rescue, and we reserve the right to deny adoption at any point during the process.
