Akira's Story
Akira is a stunning 1.5-year-old shepherd-type girl weighing about 70 pounds. Tall, lean, and graceful, she has the look of a German Shepherd with long legs and a gorgeous fluffy shepherd tail. Pictures simply don't do her justice—she is even more beautiful and impressive in person. This sweet girl is a gentle soul who is still learning what it feels like to be truly loved. Akira spent months in a rural shelter before coming into rescue, and she's now adjusting to life as a cherished family member. While she can be a little shy in new situations, she is settling in more every day and discovering that people can be kind and trustworthy.

Akira is incredibly smart and eager to learn. She picks up routines almost immediately and continues to impress her foster family with how quickly she understands expectations. She is fully house trained and fully crate trained, and she does wonderfully in her crate when left home alone. She rides beautifully in the car, walks nicely on leash without much pulling, and is truly one of the most well-behaved dogs you could meet. One of Akira's favorite things is relaxing with a Benebone or chew toy. She can happily entertain herself for hours, content to lay on her dog bed and chew while her family goes about their day. While she has a calm, easygoing nature, she still has a fun, playful side. She loves going for walks and enjoys a good game of chase with her dog friends. If another dog wants to run and play in the yard, Akira is always happy to join in. Akira gets along beautifully with dogs of all sizes and is especially respectful of smaller dogs that may not want to wrestle or roughhouse. She shares toys nicely, reads other dogs well, and has excellent doggy manners. She is also good with cats and does well with children.

Despite her shepherd appearance, Akira is not a high-energy or high-strung dog. She is perfectly happy spending a quiet day lounging on her bed with a bone, following her people around the house, or curling up nearby on the couch. She has a calm, gentle presence that makes her an absolute joy to live with. Because she is still building confidence and learning about life outside the shelter, Akira would thrive with a patient family that will continue to show her love, kindness, and consistency. She has come so far already and is blossoming into an amazing companion. Akira is ready to find the forever family she has always deserved. To apply to adopt Akira, visit bcaaofnj.org.
