AJ's Story

Meet Almond Joy, a.k.a. AJ: a little bit of this, a dash of that, and a whole lot of sweet.

AJ is a 4-year-old, 18-pound, small mixed breed whose ancestry is a true mystery. She's a real Heinz 57, with the tri-color coat of a spaniel, with a white bib and a white sock, and the expressive eyebrows of a Rottweiler. We don't know what's in the mix, but we know the result is adorable.

A slow burn, worth the wait
AJ is shy, timid, and tad anxious, but she needs time to trust. She's the kind of dog who warms up quietly and gets sweeter the more safe she feels. With continued decompression, we expect her to keep opening up.

On leash: She loves going for walks, and is great on a leash once she finds a quiet street. On a busier street, she may sit down for a moment or rest her near your legs but for encouragement. She loves going into stores and cafes and is a well-mannered little lady. She's food motivated and eager to be obedient, so treats go a long way!
Crate: She's a cozy girl and appreciates a soft place to nap. She appears to be crate trained, or at least finds comfort in taking extended breaks in her crate. She has not demonstrated separation anxiety.
Other dogs: Outside of the home or on-leash, she is not reactive to other dogs, regardless of size. Indoors, she doesn't really like to share her people, so we'd recommend she go to a home without another resident dog.

What AJ needs

A quiet, low-traffic home. Because she's fearful and doesn't always like to share, she isn't a good fit for a household with heavy foot traffic.
No small children. She needs a calm, predictable environment.
Patience and consistency. A foster or adopter who lets her set the pace and builds trust with routine, treats, and gentle encouragement.

AJ is a sweetheart who's still finding her confidence. The right person will get to watch it bloom.

Vaccinated for rabies, DHPP, and bordetella, heartworm negative, and microchipped. Current on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Spay surgery to be scheduled once recovered from kennel cough.

To apply for AJ, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the dog is on our website, they are still available.

Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue.

Adoptions: adopt@waggytailrescue.org
