Abby (Reduced Rover)'s Story
ABBY - THE SMALL DOG WITH BIG FEELINGS, A BRILLIANT BRAIN, AND A HEART WORTH EARNING

Sixteen pounds of complexity, charm, and cautious devotion.

Some dogs trot into your life like open books.
Abby is a short novel - beautifully written, occasionally dog-eared, and absolutely worth reading cover to cover.

At 5-6 years old and 16 tidy pounds, Abby is a Rat Terrier mix who has lived enough life to know exactly what she needs. When her owner moved into a nursing home, Abby found herself in a crowded rural shelter-confused, grieving, and stripped of the predictability she depended on. That kind of upheaval leaves marks, and Abby carries hers honestly.

But in her foster home?
Oh, she is blossoming.

She has learned leash manners.
She knows "sit" and "hush."
She lounges in the sun like a tiny aristocrat on holiday.
She chases squirrels along the fence with the intensity of someone trying to win an Emmy.
And with people she trusts, her whole body wiggles with a joy so sincere it can rearrange your heart.

But let us be clear-because Abby deserves clarity:

Abby is not a decorative dog.
She is not a purse dog.
She is not a "just pick her up and move her" dog.

If she is startled or forced, she will snap-not because she is mean, but because something in her past taught her that sudden hands are dangerous. Her boundaries are not flaws; they are the map to loving her well.

She needs:
An experienced, kid-free home
A calm, stable environment
A person who believes consent applies to dogs too
Patience, routine, and positive reinforcement
Someone home most of the day - she struggles with long absences

She is improving with housetraining and uses pee pads overnight if needed. She is not destructive; her anxiety shows up as longing, not chaos.

And here is the part that matters most:

With the right person, Abby is magnificent.
Not instantly.
Not dramatically.
But steadily, deeply, genuinely.

She becomes devoted.
She becomes affectionate.
She becomes the little shadow who greets you with full-body wiggles and gratitude you can feel in your bones.

Abby doesn't want the whole world - she just wants her person.

If you are patient, experienced, compassionate, and ready to love a small dog with a big past and a bigger heart...

Abby is waiting for you.

PLEASE READ BELOW:

If you are interested in meeting and/or adopting, the first step is to complete an application and read all of our FAQs:

https://www.takepawsrescue.org/adopt

Please note: Information to determine if you might be a match for one of our animals can only be found on our application.
*An inquiry, questions or introduction through Petfinder is NOT an application*
All known details about our animals are posted on their profile and updated daily. Other info will be discussed in detail with the foster during the application review process. Due to the high volume of introductions/questions received we ask you to submit an application (that application can be used for any dog with Take Paws Rescue).

The adoption fee for adult dogs covers age appropriate vaccinations, microchip, spay/neuter if not yet performed, heartworm test & appropriate heartworm treatment by the rescue's vet. All dogs in our care are also kept up-to-date on HW/Flea Prevention.
For more on this, or for additional information, including the adoption process and our adoption fee scale for all our adoptable pets (including an explanation about Benefactor Dogs), please see our FAQs page:

https://www.takepawsrescue.org/faq

Any breed labels used by Take Paws Rescue, its employees/volunteers, or on vet records provided cannot be guaranteed. Breed labels are given based on information obtained during intake and/or best guesses based on appearance and/or temperament of the dogs and Take Paws Rescue gives no assurance to the accuracy of these labels.
And with people she trusts, her whole body wiggles with a joy

But let us be clear-because Abby deserves clarity:
Abby is not a decorative dog.
She is not a purse dog.
She is not a "just pick her up and move her" dog.
If she is startled or forced, she will snap-not because she is mean, but because something in her past taught her that sudden hands are dangerous. Her boundaries are not
