603 (2026) Mama Penny's Story
Adoption Fee: $475

When available, all animals are fixed in accordance with Colorado law, up to date on vaccines (may need boosters), and microchipped!

What we know: Mama dog (603, Penny - came with the name Saga) transferred with one puppy out of her litter of 9 from the Animal Services Center of Mesilla Valley in New Mexico. The family was found living under a trailer home when the puppies were very young. Other 8 puppies (numbers 660-668) came at a later date after URI symptoms cleared. First transferred puppy, Mabel (604) was found at the same location as mom and 8 other puppies at a later date and assumed to be hers as well.

Additional Needs: Penny has a chronic, non-painful, autoimmune condition in both eyes called diffuse episcleritis. This has caused cholesterol and new blood vessels to deposit in the periphery of her corneas. Her vision is currently normal because the center of her
corneas are clear. The goal of treatment is to prevent the condition from progressing to obstruct her central visual axis. She will need Cyclosporine 1% (eyedrops) likely for the duration of her life. Penny will come with her current bottle and refills through Chewy.com are approximately $70 for a two-month supply.

From the foster: Mama Penny is one of the most loyal pups we have ever fostered. She is my shadow, literally. If I am sitting, she is on my feet on the recliner or next to me on the couch. If I am walking, she is behind me, everywhere. If I use the bathroom, she is insulted if she can't come inside with me. Regardless, she will gladly wait outside the door until I come back out. We don't know if she has ever lived with a family. She was found with her family of 9 pups, living under a mobile home. She must have protected them with her life as she was so skinny and malnourished when they were all found. All her puppies were healthy and happy when they were found and have all since been adopted. Since then, she has been able to eat up and get healthy too. She has put on weight and become a part of our pack at home. With a proper introduction, she seems to get along with most dogs she has met. With our two older dogs, she gets along great. However, she simply co-exists with them quite peacefully. She doesn't need them to play with her or keep her busy. She simply wants to exist with her people. Penny has an auto-immune issue with her eyes as well. Her pretty eyes look like they have a contact lens stuck in them. She will need eye drops daily for the rest of her life to keep her vision as perfect as it is today. She is one of the happiest pups we have ever had, judging by the wag of her tail every time we mention her name. Do you deserve to have Penny in your home furever? If you think so, please come meet her.

www.coloradopuppy.org/how-to-adopt
