569 (2026) Dixie's Story
Adoption Fee: $475

When available, all animals are fixed in accordance with Colorado law, up to date on vaccines (may need boosters), and microchipped!

What we know: Litter of 10 puppies, originally part of a litter of 14, found at approximately 2 months old in Texas. While in the care of another rescue, the litter slowly began breaking with parvo and sadly 3 puppies ultimately passed away. One puppy was transferred to another rescue, while the remaining 10 puppies were transferred into our care at approximately 4.5-5 months old.

From the foster: Meet Dixie, a shy gentle sweetheart with a playful side just waiting to shine!

Dixie is a 6-month-old puppy who may be a little reserved when you first meet her, but once she feels safe, her sweet and playful personality really comes out. She's quickly learning that people are kind and the world isn't so scary, and each day she grows more confident and curious. Dixie is genuinely sweet down to her bones. She's tender and gentle with her behavior and her affection. If you're looking for a gentle, dare we say 'calm' puppy, Dixie's your girl.

Once comfortable, Dixie loves to play and has lower puppy energy. She's still learning her basics and would do best in a patient, understanding home that can help guide her through all the "firsts" of puppyhood. She is doing well on potty training, she is ringing bells to go outside to potty and uses the doggie door. She is consistently going pee on the "go potty" command. When Dixie became comfortable, she has done her business on leash. Until she is, she will need at least a small outdoor space to go potty.

Dixie is wonderful on leash, though those bunnies do seem interesting. She greets friendly dogs calmly on leash (all are familiar community dogs), she will meet people one-on-one but more make her nervous right now. Dixie is unsure of leash reactive dogs, sometimes they're just scary, but she is playful on leash with familiar friends. She loves to chase her foster brother. A fenced in yard would be the perfect space for her to run and play. She's all gangly legs right now, so watching play with her dog friends is hilarious!

Dixie has aced crate training. When you're heading out to work (or errands) and open the freezer door, pulling out a frozen peanut butter Kong, she's either already prancing to her kennel for her treat or already waiting inside. Amazing in a week's time. The frozen peanut butter Kong is the secret sauce to Dixie falling in love with her kennel. She is quiet in her kennel during the day and will choose to nap in her kennel just because.
Dixie would thrive in a home with another friendly, well-balanced dog who can help show her the ropes and match her playful but low-key energy. Dixie looks to other dogs as how to behave in all situations. She's a sponge eager to learn all the wonderful things your dog knows. Even, 'if I lay quietly on a dog bed at bedtime and mirror my foster siblings' perfect manners, do I have to go sleep in my pen? I'll be an angel...' and she has been a complete angel all night long. As the weeks have gone by, Dixie follows her foster siblings' rules (as in their actual rules). Bedtime, 'But I still want to play.' Foster brother or sister, 'No, bedtime is quiet time.' And she will settled, even if she's awake, she'll lay quietly on her mat because it's now quiet time. Following their rules and examples first. A calm, structured environment will help her continue to blossom into the confident dog she's meant to be.

Dixie is a reserved girl, learning the world is a safe space. Behind her nervousness is a brave heart learning to come out. The first several days the doggie door was a scary thing, maybe the scariest as it swung back in her face when her foster siblings bolted outside, but by day 5, her heart found its bravery and she nervously went through the terrifying doggie door to realize the fun she could find chasing her foster brother in and out. She was hesitant, pawing at first before peering out the tiniest bit with her nose, and now hits it at Mach 10 when it's fun time. She takes time but when she takes that trusting step, your pride in her comes bursting out.

Dixie most favorite places to sleep are coolest. Be it the cool tile floor or a cooling mat for summertime, she'll find her way to the best spot every-time.

Dixie has been doing well in the car. First week, it was lifting her in and pulling her out. But after weeks of rides, treats and adventures, she's learned the car can bring fun. She's started following her foster siblings lead and loading up and jumping out all on her own. She calmly lays down as we drive around town. She needs patience and caring guidance to discover the world is fun.

Dixie has shown next to no mischievous behavior. There was this one game of chase where she got the plunger out the doggie door on her second try, but that's been it. She has a calm, low energy presence and hasn't needed the outlet that leads to mischief.

Dixie is wonderful with doggie stuffies, loves to chew on doggie treats. She's a fan of kneecaps and pig ears, but funny enough will take apart a triple rawhide chew and eat the chicken and pork, but leaves the beef. Every time. Her foster brother doesn't mind this at all. With the fancy treats and at mealtime, Dixie has shown no resource guarding. She's so chill that shares her bougie treats, but on the reverse side, she expects their treats to be shared with her. She'll take the bully stick or beef trachea out of her foster brother's mouth and lay down beside him to chew until later when he takes it back and vice versa. Dixie would thrive with an easy-going dog who understands there's always more where that came from.

Dixie is a slow, light eater that we're trying to encourage to eat more. She prefers to graze her kibble over the course of the day and will eat from ANY bowl with food. She's a string bean. But the sweetest, gentlest string bean you've ever met. After a week, Dixie has become comfortable enough to ask for more food between meals when she is hungry (often by flipping whichever metal bowl is nearest and makes the best noise on the tile floor), eating one bite at a time, but more is good for her and feeling confident to ask is even better.

If you're ready to watch a gentle, shy pup grow into a joyful companion, come meet Dixie!

www.coloradopuppy.org/how-to-adopt
