Ushi's Story

My foster writes: If Ushi has one thing, it's character. As a senior, nearly-toothless, heavy-breathing former street cat, the world hasn't been an easy place for him. But with any form of affection - kind words, slow blinks, chin scratches - he melts into the softie we know him to be. All this guy needs is a cozy spot to sleep, a windowsill to perch on and your legs to rub up against when he comes to seek pets. Ushi runs sniff security checks on our house guests, and nothing feels more affirming than his cozy stamp of approval. He also, despite efforts to coax him, seems completely disinterested in jumping up onto our furniture: how polite! He's independent, experienced and silent (save for his ridiculously cute Darth-Vader-like breathing)...what's not to love?!?! Take a chance on this senior black kitty and you'll feel like the luckiest person in the world!

My foster writes: Ushi is a truly distinguished NYC boroughbred. He's done his time on the NYC streets serving his community and keeping the peace. Oh the stories he could tell! And now he's looking for a retirement home where he can let his guard down and enjoy some comfort and TLC in his golden years.
Ushi got this far in life by watching his back and keeping to himself. His heroes are those hardboiled movie detectives, keeping their collar up and their hat brim down, sniffing out corruption in the shadows and searching for truth in the seedy city. And old habits die hard, so at first Ushi seems aloof and withdrawn. But there's a real softie inside his stoic exterior. Once Ushi is feeling safe and happy he will literally melt into pets and cuddles. It's very rewarding to watch this big guy learn to trust humans and accept the delights of apartment living. "Oh, this soft comfy bed is for *me*? Don't mind if I do...!"
Ushi is a creature of habit and routine. He'll stake out one or two favourite tucked-away nap spots that he'll return to day in, day out. And he takes mealtimes very seriously - he'll quietly sit by his food bowl until you get the message...! While he will sometimes scamper away to stay out of trouble, he's wise enough to know never to pick a fight - he is not aggressive.
Ushi will be happiest in a quiet, chill, low-traffic home where the humans will respect his need for alone time - but also lavish him with the care and affection he deserves in the golden years of his remarkable, colorful life.

My foster writes: Ushi is a shy cat who needs a little time to feel safe in a new home.
At first he may keep some distance, but with patience and quiet companionship he slowly starts coming closer on his own.
He has a few small imperfections.
One ear looks a bit different, there are some spots on his legs without much fur, and sometimes he gets a little eye discharge.
He loves canned food and squeeze treats.
They make it much easier to win his trust.
He also has some very funny habits.
If you pet his lower back his butt pops right up, and if you touch his cheeks he immediately flops onto the floor and melts there to enjoy the attention.
Ushi just needs someone patient and gentle.
Once he feels comfortable, he becomes a very sweet and quietly affectionate companion.

A volunteer writes: We're so glad Ushi is currently warm and safe at the Care Center, and we think he seems pretty pleased as well! Ever since he's come through our doors he's been sweet, calm, curious, and easy to handle, enjoying petting sessions and scarfing down lots of treats. He can sometimes be shy as he sizes up new human faces, but after a quick warm-up he's ready to make friends and enjoy the affection and interaction. Our behavior team can vouch for his comfort with people and generally chill demeanor, deeming Ushi to be a good fit for almost all types of households. We don't know what kind of life he had before he came to us, but it's a good bet that this wonderful guy was well socialized with people in a home. Now, he's ready to make the move to yours.

Another volunteer writes:
Ushi(Little Bear in German) was brought to us by the Good Samaritan who was taking care of him for years as an outdoor cat. He had a cold(now resolved)and was quite underweight and being a senior, it was about time for Ushi to find a safe haven for his golden years. Ushi likes to shelter in his cubby but say his name, bring some tasty treats and he will be out in nano seconds.. Ushi is a bit handshy but being a smart kitty, he is slowly easing himself into being an indoor pet. Ushi so deserves a new page in his life, filled with warmth, safety and love.
