Rudy/Calvin's Story

Calvin’s story with Smelly Cat Rescue actually began back in 2022, when he was just about 8 weeks old. His mama brought him to the back door of a home in Lake Saint Louis, and it quickly became clear that there was something a little different about this tiny guy. Calvin was showing signs of neurological challenges, and we eventually learned he has Cerebellar Hypoplasia, or CH. CH affects Calvin’s balance and coordination, giving him his signature wobbly walk. It doesn’t cause him pain, and Calvin doesn’t know he’s any different. He’s simply figured out his own way of navigating the world. Back then, we knew him as Rudy. He was adopted, grew up, and spent the next few years with the family he loved.

Unfortunately, his family recently fell on hard times and had to move into temporary housing that doesn’t allow cats. Through no fault of his own, Calvin found himself back with Smelly Cat Rescue and looking for a new chapter.

And Calvin? He’s handling it like a champ. He’s settled right back in, making himself at home and charming the people around him. His wobbles are part of what makes him Calvin, and once you see him confidently making his way toward whatever has caught his attention, it’s pretty impossible not to smile.

Like many special-needs kitties, Calvin does come with a few quirks. His bathroom aim, for example, is about as precise as his walking. He uses his litter box, but about half the time when he poops, he gets almost there and leaves it right outside the box.Apparently, Calvin believes proximity counts. It’s manageable, but his future family should be prepared for a little extra cleanup and understand that accommodations are simply part of loving this wobbly guy.

Calvin will need a family who understands that a CH kitty may do things a little differently and is willing to make his world safe and accessible. In return, you get a cat who has already shown just how adaptable, resilient, and wonderfully himself he can be.

Calvin isn’t looking for someone who expects perfect. Perfect balance, perfect coordination, perfect litter box aim...yeah, that’s probably not happening. He’s looking for someone who will love him exactly as he is. He had a family once. Now this sweet, wobbly boy is ready to find the one that will be his forever. 9/28/26 12:49 PM

Smelly Cat Rescue's Adoption Policy
We are a home-foster-based rescue and do not have a public facility for open visits. Instead, we'll match you with the volunteer foster family for the cat(s) or kitten(s) of your choice for an in-home meet and greet upon application approval and availability. Please read the application questions and consider your answers carefully before submitting. An application does not guarantee or commit you to adopting a cat from Smelly Cat Rescue. There is no fee to apply for our cats or kittens. Kittens can't go home alone! We give preference to kitten applications that already have a young cat at home or are wanting to adopt kittens in pairs. Applicants must be 21 years of age or older and able to pick up adopted animals from St. Louis or St. Charles county, Missouri. Cat/Kitten adoption fee is $175 each and includes sterilization, vaccinations (starter vaccinations for kittens under 16 weeks), deworming, microchip and triple snap test. Payments can be made via the 'Shop' page on the website, cash or check made out to Smelly Cat Rescue. Please be sure to check your junk mail! Sometimes our email responses can get sent to junk mail and if we don't receive a response, we could move on. We don't want you to miss out because of your spam filters! Many of our adoptable cats are available for visits, pets and play at our partner facility, the Cat Zen Cafe and Lounge on beautiful and historic Main Street in St. Charles, MO! Walk-ins welcome or reservations can be made (and highly encouraged!) through their website for 30 minute or 1 hour increments (+ tax) and you can also enjoy a hot or cold beverage and snack while getting to know some of our amazing adoptable floofs in an open area setting. Play with them with toys, sit on the comfy couches while they snooze or just enjoy the pets and snuggles of a cozy purr machine and find your own ‘Zen’. If one of the cats catches your heart while you visit, come back and apply here! We love when a best friend connection is already made! www.catzenlounge.com Adoption Terms - I am adopting this cat for myself. I will not gift, trade, or sell it in its lifetime. If at any time I can no longer care for this cat, I will return it to Smelly Cat Rescue. - This cat will be treated as a family member. It will be given love, affection, clean living conditions, fresh food and water daily, and yearly veterinary care. - This cat will live inside my home. The cat will never be outside without a proper leash, harness, carrier, or backpack. - I understand cats have a natural instinct to scratch things, including furniture. There are safe & affordable options to deter this behavior. I understand declawing a cat is a painful & inhumane procedure. Smelly Cat Rescue prohibits all adopters from declawing their animals at any time. - Adult cats are the most overlooked stray/lost animals. Especially if they aren’t wearing a collar. Your cat may be microchipped, but proper identification is critical to getting lost cats returned to their owners. I, the adopter, will purchase a “breakaway” collar for the cat, with an ID tag and will make every effort to always keep this collar on the cat. - Smelly Cat Rescue is not responsible for any future medical expenses, injuries, property damage, or future legal problems caused by owning this cat. - I understand a comprehensive medical evaluation has not been done on this cat. It is the adopter’s responsibility to take the cat to a veterinarian for a proper well-check and vaccinations. - I understand that failure to perform the duties listed in this agreement will result in a breach of contract. In such an event I authorize Smelly Cat Rescue to reclaim possession of adopted cat. - We offer a 21-day medical return policy. If within the first 21-days of ownership a medical condition is discovered that you don’t feel you can handle, or should have been disclosed, Smelly Cat Rescue will accept the cat back and refund the adoption fee. Smelly Cat Rescue will not reimburse any veterinary or other care expenses incurred during the 21-day period.
