Meet Rick Mercer & Alan Doyle

Rick Mercer was rescued from Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland in December 2019. He met Alan Doyle when they came to our rescue in January and they instantly became best friends.
Healing Animal SCARS - Sonya's Cat & Animal Rescue Society took in 2 more of the kitties from Little Bay Islands cat rescue mission who had arrived in Nova Scotia in mid December. They have been neutered and were being socialized by volunteers, but they hadn't made quite enough progress to move to the SPCA for adoption. So our rescue was willing to take them in and work with them.

The Tabby and white young male was formerly known as Mikey, but I have christened him ranting Rick Mercer because he is very vocal and hisses and acts tough but he is a total love bug and I got him to purr on Saturday.

The big grey and white boy was being called Codfish but I decided to name him Alan Doyle because he's simply a big lovable dude!

Rick Mercer and Alan Doyle spent the first night in separate cages, and early Saturday morning they were allowed to roam throughout the room and get to know the other kitties from Little Bay Islands, Mummer and Jiggs. Thank you very much to Christine Kennedy who took Janney and Lil G into foster the other day, freeing up space here and making it possible for me to take Rick Mercer and Alan Doyle.

Both boys are shy, and very bonded so it would be best to find them a home together. Alan Doyle is the big grey and white boy in the front, and Rick Mercer is the Tabby and white smaller boy in the back. They came from Little Bay Islands, Newfoundland and Labrador. They would have been sent to a barn but I felt they deserve an indoor home. They need to find a human who understands shy kitties and will work with them. If you are interested in adopting them from Healing Animal SCARS - Sonya's Cat & Animal Rescue Society please call me at 902-469-6369 to find out about the adoption special for this pair.
They have both been tested for feline leukaemia and FIV, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped.
Alan Doyle likes to lick chicken baby food off of my fingers, and he enjoys when I scratch all the way down his back, because his rump rises in the air and his tail goes up. Rick Mercer is a scaredy-cat, and he often hisses when you first approach. I always say hisses earn kisses! A cat hisses as a startle reflex when they are scared. If you don't let the hissing bother you, this shows the cat that they can't scare you away. In any case, Rick Mercer is all talk and rants. He may hiss but he actually loves to play and enjoys being brushed. The boys spend a lot of time hiding inside Kitty condos, but they also enjoy sitting in the window and romping with other cats. I have a video camera in the kitty rescue room, and I often see them playing and wrestling at night. I have taken some live videos showing them grooming each other. They really are a bonded pair! They came from different parts of Little Bay islands and did not grow up together, but instantly became best friends when they came to my house. It's a bromance for the ages!
Let's see if we can find them their happily ever after.
After spending the first few weeks in the rescue room, they have started having sleepovers in my bedroom and they are getting braver. Rick Mercer loves to play tug of war with wand toys, and he hops on the bed to snuggle other cats. Alan Doyle lets me pick him up for short cuddle sessions, and then slowly stretches out and slinks away. He likes me to rub him from head to tail, and rises his bum in the air to show he is happy. These boys would do best in a home without children. They need someone willing to put the time into helping them learn how to trust. If you shower them with TLC and feed them from your fingers, they will soon be comfortable with you.
