R & R: Rhys & Rosario<br/><br/>Typically, when you see “R & R,” you think of rest and relaxation. But not here. For us, R & R means Rhys and Rosario—a devoted son-and-mother duo who came to us in late April of 2024.<br/><br/>They were rescued by a former adopter who truly did right by them: both were spayed and neutered and brought safely indoors. Unfortunately, with three resident cats already at home, keeping them long-term wasn’t feasible, and that’s how they found their way to us. I initially believed they were easygoing and easy to handle—but that turned out not to be the case. They were only easy on the eyes. In reality, they were absolutely terrified of us.<br/><br/>Because of that, their story hasn’t gotten much attention. We’ve given them what they needed most: time. Time to decompress, to adjust, and to begin learning—slowly—that humans might not be so frightening after all. Nearly two years later, progress has been modest. Rhys’ trust remains incredibly hard-won, while Rosario has softened but still does not seek out attention or affection.<br/><br/>Rosario is content being the steady guardian of her stunningly handsome, painfully shy son—and Rhys adores his mother beyond measure. We estimate Rosario was born in late spring of 2022, with Rhys following in September of 2023. Few bonds are as deep or as genuine as theirs; watching them together is both endearing and profoundly moving.<br/><br/>They are doing well in the Clubhouse, but we don’t realistically see them as adoptable. Rhys, in particular, remains very skittish. That said, both have made progress. With patience and consistency, they now allow the occasional pet, which once felt unimaginable. It’s difficult to accept that some cats will always remain semi-feral—but knowing they are safe, secure, and respected here makes that reality easier to hold.<br/><br/>Rhys will most likely always be a feral fella. He plays happily with other cats (and often by himself), enjoys back scratches from select people, and observes us closely—but handling him is off the table. He’s more relaxed when he sees us giving his mom attention, but he rarely lets his guard down for more than a fleeting moment.<br/><br/>Rosario is coming around slowly but surely. She can be handled when needed and is becoming more social in her own quiet way, though she remains guarded. She gets along well with the other cats and serves as an excellent role model for her son, showing him how to coexist peacefully in a shared space.<br/><br/>We are confident that Rhys and Rosario will be Purrmanent Residents, and that’s perfectly okay with us. They will always be safe, protected, well cared for, and surrounded by love—even if they don’t always want it. 😊<br/><br/>Some cats don’t need adoption stories.<br/>They just need a place where they can be.
