Meet Racer! Racer's journey hasn't been easy—but it's proof of the power of patience, kindness, and trust. She came to us from the Sacramento SPCA, where she wasn't thriving in the shelter environment. Arriving FeLV positive, scared, and unsure of humans, Racer didn't fight or hiss—she simply did what fear teaches so many cats: run, hide, disappear. Even in those early days, we noticed something remarkable. Racer was frightened—but she was also watching, listening, learning. Trying to decide if the world could ever feel safe. So we didn't rush her. We met her where she was. One of our staff, Cherri, began showing up each morning with a small offering: “morning crunchies.” No pressure. No expectations. Just quiet, consistent kindness. Slowly—so slowly—Racer began to trust. She stayed closer to the door. She lingered. Treats became trust. Trust became gentle pets. And then... something shifted. Now at FieldHaven Marketplace, Racer is a completely different cat. She greets visitors at the top of her enclosure, eager for attention. And the most magical part? Racer is now a lap-sitter—a cat who once tried to vanish is choosing closeness, warmth, and connection. Racer has FeLV (regressive). This means she has tested positive but is currently healthy and non-contagious. There's a small chance the virus could reactivate, so she should live in a home as the only cat, or with other FeLV-positive cats.
