Quatro's Story

Quatro
Male brown tabby DSH
Estimated age: 4 years

Quatro is hands down the SWEETEST man. He will sit on your lap purring nonstop and follow you around for attention. He also gets so excited for food and is very vocal when it's meal time. He enjoys his own personal space so would do good as an only pet or with other pets who prefer their own space as well.

This sweet man was surrendered because his owner had too many animals and needed to find placement for some of them. He was incredibly lucky to find his way to the rescue because he had a few health concerns that were discovered when we brought him into the vet to be neutered. First of all, we found out he was FIV positive so we are glad that we were able to get him out of a multiple cat environment while being an intact male because those circumstances are exactly what caused him to become infected with FIV in the first place. Additionally, he had a very painful condition called pododermatitis (often called "pillow foot"). This condition causes the paw pads to become swollen, cracked, and often times they blister causing extreme pain when walking. He was treated for this which has since thankfully resolved. He also had stomatitis which is an incredibly painful condition in which the body starts to attack the teeth. This leads to painful gingivitis and tooth resorption that can only be treated by extracting all of the teeth. So, Quatro had a full mouth extraction and no longer has any teeth. It was a really rough recovery, but he has healed and is now pain free and doesn't even know he doesn't have teeth and still eats hard food and has no on-going restrictions. He is way happier than he ever was before! This guy is now thriving and looking for his forever home.

Medical: Because Quatro is FIV positive, he needs a low stress environment, quality food, exams at least yearly and proactive veterinary care to ensure he stays healthy. Because he has a compromised immune system, he's not the type of cat that you try the "wait it out" approach if he's sick. Although FIV cats can be more prone to certain medical diseases, they more often than not live completely normal lives compared to their counterparts. As medicine has advanced, we now know that having FIV is not at all a death sentence like it had been treated as previously. These cats live comparable lives to non FIV positive cats and deserve a home and love all the same. We highly recommend finding a veterinarian who is comfortable with and knowledgeable about FIV. Depending on their clients, FIV may not be something that every veterinarian sees regularly in their practice, so it can be daunting and they may not be familiar with the most recent guidelines for FIV cats and how they can live normal and healthy lives.

You can learn more about FIV through the American Association of Feline Practitioners' Feline Retrovirus Management Guidelines or from the Feline Veterinary Medicine Association's website and brochures such as this one!
https://catvets.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/FelineVMA_FeLV-and-FIV-Broch_Web.2.pdf

All cats are spayed/neutered, current on age appropriate vaccines (rabies and distemper), microchipped, given flea/tick prevention and dewormer, FIV/FeLV tested, and any other veterinary care that is needed prior to adoption.

Location: In foster

If you are interested in adopting, fill out an application online at www.figandfriendspetrescue.org/adopt

Fig and Friends Pet Rescue's Adoption Policy
~We do not adopt to homes with animals who are not spayed or neutered unless there is a valid reason such as vet recommendation. ~We do check references including landlord if you rent and your vet both past and present. ~We do not adopt to homes that plan on declawing the cat we have adopted out to you or that plan on letting a cat outside (unless on a leash and harness under owner's continued observation). ~If we see something on your application that we are concerned about, we will always try and have a conversation with you to find out the why. We understand you might have declawed a cat in the past or had to rehome an animal. It can happen to anyone. We like to dig deeper and won't deny someone just based on surface information.
