- Vaccinations up to date, spayed / neutered, special needs. Pumba was surrendered with a history of not using the litter box and recurrent urinary tract infection (UTI). Litterbox aversion can be caused by a variety of medical or behavioral problems. He will be monitored for litter box use during his stay. If this inappropriate urination reoccurs further diagnostics are needed. A urinalysis was completed and revealed significant blood and protein as well as both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals. Urinary crystals can form for many different reasons including chronic urinary tract infections, diet, genetics, etc. A special prescription diet has been started to help dissolve these urinary crystals and promote urinary health. If his symptoms continue abdominal imaging may be necessary to look for bladder stone. Pumba was started on treatment for this condition and should be closely monitored. Large amounts of crystals in the urine of male cats may cause a urethral obstruction (blocked cat) which is a life-threatening surgical emergency. Pumba was monitored and found to be using his litter box well since his arrival. He has been using an open top style litter pan with clay litter. At this time it is recommended that Pumba continue his prescription diet to treat for his urinary crystals. He may need to be on this special diet for life. Pumba should have a urinalysis rechecked by your veterinarian on January 30.

Meet Pumba
Hi, my name is Pumba. Unfortunately, my owners were no longer able to care for me. I’m not letting it get me down though, I am hopeful that my perfect match is out there somewhere. Maybe it’s you? I have been friendly with my friends at the shelter and didn’t show any behavior concerns during my vet exam. I can become a little overstimulated with too much handling, and may need a second to myself. I have done well with cats and kids in the past. We do not know how I would do with dogs.
