Meet Oscar, a champion who deserves a home in his corner! He's a handsome buff-colored young guy estimated to be about one year old. And if you ask us, this Oscar has already proven that he's got the heart of a champion!<br/><br/>Maybe it's no coincidence that he's named Oscar. His story has a little something in common with famous boxer Oscar De La Hoya: both have had to overcome challenges, both are fighters and both know that having the right people in your corner can make all the difference.<br/><br/>Oscar is looking for his people now.<br/><br/> From the Streets to Safety<br/>Oscar came to ARF in mid-August, brought to us by a local grassroots rescue organization. Before that, he was living outdoors as part of a large cat colony, fending for himself. Life on the streets isn't easy. At some point, Oscar suffered an open wound on his ear. Thankfully, he was safely secured and was able to receive the veterinary care he needed to treat the injury.<br/><br/>The original plan was for Oscar to participate in a TNR program.<br/> What's TNR?<br/>TNR stands for Trap-Neuter-Return. It's a humane program for community cats. Cats are safely trapped, taken to a veterinarian to be spayed or neutered and vaccinated and then returned to their outdoor colony.<br/><br/>Once he was safely in the hands of people, it became clear that this guy was much too friendly and tame to be sent back to the streets. Oscar wanted something different and we think he deserves the chance to find it.<br/><br/>You may notice a health waiver in Oscar's file. Please don't let that deter you from getting to know him. He has tested positive for FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). FIV is a virus that affects cats and cannot be transmitted to dogs or humans. It is most commonly spread between outdoor cats through serious bite wounds, particularly when outdoor cats are competing over territory and limited resources.<br/><br/>FIV-positive cats who live indoors, receive appropriate veterinary care, good nutrition, attention, and plenty of love can enjoy long, healthy lives.<br/><br/>Oscar's FIV status doesn't change the fact that he's a young, friendly cat who deserves a chance at a wonderful life. Our adoption consultant will be happy to answer any questions you may have.<br/><br/> Oscar Needs You in His Corner<br/>Oscar has already fought through life on the streets, an ear injury and a major change in circumstances. Now, instead of having to fight for food, shelter and territory, we'd like to see him spend his days doing something much more important: Being a loved cat.<br/><br/>Like a champion boxer, Oscar doesn't need everyone to believe in him. He just needs someone willing to get in his corner. If you can offer Oscar a safe indoor home, good care and lots of love, you may discover that this buff-colored boy is the real prizefighter of your heart. Come meet Oscar. His next victory could be finding you. <br/><br/>The shelter is open Tuesdays through Fridays 3:30-6:30pm AND Saturdays & Sundays 1pm-4pm. No appointments are needed during those times.
