Nyla and Nelson's Story

Nyla walks right up to the front of her kennel and puts her face to the bars, close enough to count her whiskers, while her son Nelson watches the whole thing from the bed behind her.

Nyla is an orange tabby, somewhere between one and two years old, with a white stripe down her nose, a white chin and chest, white paws, and big gold green eyes. Nelson is eight weeks old and a paler cream orange than his mom, with the same white chest and white paws and a pair of kitten blue eyes.

We prefer to schedule appointments for meet and greets to make sure someone is available to spend time with you. The shelter is open Monday through Friday, 12pm to 4pm, and appointments outside of those hours may be available based on volunteer availability. Email adoptpetersburg@gmail.com to set up a visit or learn more today.

Petersburg Animal Care & Control's Adoption Policy

Thank you for your interest in adopting from Petersburg Animal Care & Control! We’re so glad you’re considering giving a shelter pet a loving home. We do not charge an adoption fee; however, all animals must be spayed or neutered prior to adoption, and the cost of the procedure is covered by the adopter. We’re happy to support adopters by coordinating appointments with our low-cost veterinary partners for spay/neuter services and other basic care needs. Adoption Process • We prefer to schedule appointments for meet-and-greets to ensure that staff or volunteers are available to spend adequate time helping you get to know the animal. • When you arrive, please sign in and wait to be escorted by a staff member or volunteer before entering the kennel areas. • For safety reasons, please do not reach into kennels or attempt to touch animals through barriers. If you’re interested in a particular pet, our team will bring them to a meet-and-greet area for proper introductions. • After your visit, you’re welcome to submit an adoption application. Applications must be approved before we can schedule a meet-and-greet with your family pets. • Meet-and-greets with personal pets are by appointment only, and for safety, two staff members must be present to handle all animals involved. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to make each match the best fit possible — both for our animals and their future families.
