Momma Girl's Story
"Insulin? I prefer insul-out." -Momma Girl

As you can see, Momma Girl is a very confident and self-assured kitty. She knows what she wants, and when she isn't birdwatching or chasing laser pointers, she wants pets from her adoring humans. Believe us, she's easy to adore!

When Momma Girl came to us, we quickly learned she was diabetic-- yup, cats get diabetes just like people. And just like people, treating diabetes in cats involves a combination of proper diet, exercise, and potentially medication. In Momma Girl's case the treatment is prescription food, as much exercise as possible, and a daily medication (not insulin). Even with these efforts, we find that managing diabetes in a shelter environment can be more challenging. There is no substitute for a comfortable home filled with support from a loving family.

That's where you come in! We know that if Momma Girl can find a loving, supportive home, she will thrive beyond compare.

What does Momma Girl need from you? Not much: a warm place to nap, her diabetic food (she likes it!), lots of exercise chasing laser pointers and toys, and her daily medication. Oh, and Momma Girl also reminded me that she needs lots of love from you! How silly of me to forget.

Are you ready to open up your home, heart, and mind for Momma Girl? Maybe diabetes has touched your life or the life of someone you love, maybe you believe everyone deserves second chances, or maybe you just have a huge heart that refuses to give up-- either way, Momma Girl wants you to apply! And Momma Girl knows what she wants. You can apply to adopt on our website. Moved by Momma Girl's story but not ready to adopt yet? Stop by our Wilmington location to say hello to our sweet lady Momma Girl, and ask how you can help.

This cat has been diagnosed with diabetes. Diabetes in cats is most commonly due to obesity and diet, although it is sometimes associated with chronic inflammation of the pancreas and, rarely, hereditary. Diabetes can also be complicated by infections (with dental infections among the most common) and by stress; therefore, diabetic regulation in the shelter can be difficult. Most diabetic cats require twice daily (every 12 hours) injections of insulin, along with a diet that is low in carbohydrates and higher in protein and fat. There are special prescription diets (canned and dry) designed for diabetic cats, although in some cases, working closely with your veterinarian, you may be able to find an acceptable commercial canned food (Few commercial dry foods will work, as dry foods tend to be very high in carbohydrates). Please ask for further details and/or questions!

If you are interested in adopting this cat, please submit an adoption questionnaire! Our adoption process is on a first-come, best-match basis and we are not able to hold animals. If you are interested in this specific cat but it ends up not being the best fit upon meeting, our adoption counselors will work with you to help find a match! We may require all household members, including children, to come along for the meeting to make sure it's a good fit. If a match is made, we encourage same-day adoptions! Our adoption fees include the animals' spay/neuter, microchip, age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, and a small bag of food to get you started.
