Merry (ID 24570/962)'s Story
Female spayed, 6 years old, owner release

Merry is one of those cats you have to earn.
When Merry first came to the Prince William County Animal Services Center, she was shy, unsure, and overwhelmed by the noise and constant activity around her. But then she went to foster, and with patience, love, and a safe place to decompress, Merry blossomed. Her foster mom got to see the real Merry: affectionate, happy, playful, and deeply connected to the people she trusts.
Now Merry is back at the shelter, and like many sensitive cats, she’s struggling again. She spends most of her time withdrawn and hiding, which means adopters walking by may never get to see who she truly is.
But this video? This is the REAL Merry.
When her foster mom came back to visit, Merry lit up with recognition and joy.
Watching her come alive again is a reminder that some animals simply need time, patience, and a sense of safety before they can shine.
It’s also one of the hardest parts of fostering - seeing an animal you nurtured and loved return to an environment where they struggle to show their true selves. Fosters get attached. They celebrate every tiny breakthrough. And when these animals come back to the shelter and shut down again, it hurts.
Merry deserves someone willing to look past the scared shelter cat and see the loving companion hiding underneath. We already know she’s in there.
