Merlot (bonded with Brie)'s Story

***Merlot and Brie are bonded through circumstances beyond their control. They survived the trauma of a fire, and are linked for better, hopefully not any more worse, for life.

Merlot is a beautiful 5.8 year old dilute tortoiseshell who is definitely her own cat! She is the protective older sister to shy Brie, always watching out for her and being a safe anchor, ensuring that Brie stays out of any mischief during her little forays. Although Merlot will tag along when Brie goes exploring, she seems more skittish about unknown places and will only range farther when she is feeling more settled. When feeling scared, Merlot reverts to hiding in her ‘safety sink’, where she can calm down and regain her balance.

This sweet girl truly enjoys it when people come and sit with her, as that’s her cue to start purring immediately when hands reach out to pet her gently. She will approach shyly to look for more love. With a bit more time to settle down, Merlot may very well become constant, softly purring presence anyone would find charming to have around.

She is overall a quiet cat, and only meows softly mainly at meal times in excited anticipation, since Merlot is a big eater who really enjoys her food! She will happily polish off her own bowl and Brie’s too, if allowed. Of course Merlot loves Churu treats, and that could be an easy way to bridge a connection with her.

They have been introduced to CatTV for stimulation and to get them used to noises. Baby steps for these timid girls, but they will get there eventually.

Merlot and Brie were interested in meeting the resident calico cat, but the sentiment was not reciprocal so no direct interactions were pursued. They are still skittish with new things, sudden movements and loud noises, and do not like to have their feet leave the ground. All predictable behaviours that will diminish with time, trust and security. They would do well with a quiet family of folks used to shy cats needing time and space to fully come into their own, and when they do, they will have truly come home.

Would you like to make them a part of your family? Please complete our online application found at: https://www.avacats.org/adoption-application-form.

Our adoption fees cover vetting and include spay/neuter, vaccines (initial FVRCP and rabies), flea treatment, two dewormings and microchipping.

Adoption fees are $250 for each adult cat 1 year or older. Please note that fees may apply for additional required vaccinations (at $75 per booster) due prior to adoption. Total adoption fees will be confirmed by the AVA Adoption Coordinator.
