Mammoth's Story

Mammoth<br/>I am totally flummoxed as to how I got this name. I am not overweight, I am not an elephant, and I'm not prehistoric. However, I am a 1-year, 5-month-old, black-and-white male cat, already neutered and litter-box trained. My owner found me and my two littermates as stray kittens. But after one year, she decided she did not want us and surrendered us to the HSHC on October 9, 2025. It may not surprise you to learn that I was not given much socialization, education, or playtime in my first home. Therefore, I tend to be nervous and anxious in new situations and with new people. The interviewer lady (IL) tried several times to engage me in a conversation to no avail. But on December 10, when she opened my apartment door, I looked at her from my litter-box room. After she gave me some sweet talk, I sniffed her finger and let her pet me. It felt so good that I started purring and making biscuits. This was a big step in the right direction for me. My medical exam revealed I was nervous, a flight risk, and hesitant to interact. I don't enjoy being held, but I do love being petted. On January 11, I moved into a foster home to help me gain confidence and courage. As of February 12, I was still hiding and running away if FM tried to touch me. But on March 6, she told the IL that I was making a lot of progress. I am much more comfortable and less likely to hide. I still run away when she approaches me, but I will happily let her pet me if it is my idea to go to her. I found out that I love being brushed! She can tell that my confidence has improved just by watching me move about the room. I will need a lengthy and patient settling-in period when I move into my new forever home, during which I will need gentle guidance and time to adjust at my own pace. 3-24-26
