Lucy Lou’s FAQs

What is Hocking County Humane Society’s adoption process?

Adult cats and kittens are $75 and dogs are $160. Adoption specials may be offered on certain animals or at certain times. We do not HOLD animals without a deposit. We are not a rescue, we are a municipal shelter which means we generally operate on a "first-come" basis unless we, in our best judgment, deem the potential adopter not to be an appropriate placement for the animal at this time. This could be due to the size or type of animal not appropriate for the prospective home, a potential adopter with a history of surrendering animals or the animal needing to go into a home without young kids or other pets. If you are interested in placing an animal on hold until you can arrive at the shelter for a meet and greet you must call the shelter, pay a $20 nonrefundable deposit and the maximum hold time is two days. We adopt to out of state adopters but do not transport. All adopters must come to the shelter and meet us and the animal they wish to adopt. We adopt animals out only to people who intend to make them family pets and require that new owners agree to have an unaltered pet spayed/neutered; re-examined by a veterinarian for a wellness check within 72 hours of adoption and agree to get any booster vaccinations as needed. We do our best to make sure the animals are as healthy as possible upon adoption. Adoptees are responsible for any follow-up care. Please note that dog licenses are required in the state of Ohio and are available for purchase at time of adoption if the dog will be residing in Hocking County. If for any reason, the new home is not a good fit, you may return the animal back to the shelter with no surrender fee charged. You have up to one year to select a different animal that is a better fit. Adoptees may do this one time.
