Lucky's Story

*Please read entire bio to see if you are a match for what we and our family member are looking for before inquiring*

Say "Hi" to Lucky! He's a 9 ½ year old male DSH. The first words out of everyone’s mouth when they meet Lucky are “He’s so HANDSOME!” He wears an adorable “tuxedo” and little white “socks.” He has tiny ears (which are darling) and big, inquisitive eyes which add emphasis to his expressions and will make you smile! You’ll often see Lucky with his two top canines sticking out at rest (we call it “fangs out”). Sometimes he sticks his tongue out just a bit, too – so cute!

Milwaukee Pets Alive (MPA) rescued Lucky from Milwaukee animal control when he was just 8 months old. Before arriving there, Lucky had been tortured by a cruel person(s) who cut all his whiskers off and wrapped a rubberband so tightly around his front left extremity it was presumed he'd lose that limb. Animal control was planning to kill him because of his injuries but MPA saw him and intervened in the nick of time! An injured body does not necessitate a life being ended – and we weren’t going to allow that to happen. We rescued him and named him Lucky because he was lucky to have survived human cruelty and lucky we saw him so he didn’t die needlessly at animal control.

His name became him! All of Lucky’s whiskers grew back and miraculously, he regained full function of his injured extremity. As so many of our foster families who help our animals heal that have gone through unfathomable events, Lucky’s formed a deep bond and fell in love with him (or so we thought) and adopted him.

Imagine our shock when 5 years later we got a call from a couple who found Lucky and had his microchip scanned which put them in contact with us.
Lost indoor-only cats typically stay within a 3 house radius from where they go missing. Lucky was found 2 miles away. He was lost for a long time to have gotten that far and had to cross several busy 6-lane streets to get there. His name had proven true once again and he was lucky to be alive. His adopters never told us, or anyone, that he was missing so we could look for him and help bring him home. Instead, they silently left him to fend for himself in the world that had previously been so harsh to him and that he had narrowly escaped from once before - that they witnessed the aftermath of as his original foster family! They couldn’t tell us how exactly he had gone missing (they assumed he slipped out when their dogs were let out because he had on previous occasions) and weren’t even sure when which is beyond disgusting and not the love we promise these precious beings. Their disregard for his precious life is incomprehensible. We weren’t convinced they could keep Lucky safe so we decided not to return Lucky to them and put him back into our foster program.

We took Lucky to our vet after this ordeal and discovered through blood work that he had contracted FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). FIV is transmitted from cat to cat through deep puncture wounds. We’re unsure whether Lucky got FIV on one of the occasions he got outdoors or from a cat his adopters brought into their home after they adopted Lucky – we didn’t learn much from them as they weren't being forthright. Lucky was not FIV positive when we adopted him to his foster family in 2013, and he was now, but it doesn’t matter. FIV is simply a weakened immunity. For a being with a lowered immunity, if they get a wound or become ill, you address it right away (as they have more difficulty fighting off infections) – but that’s just logical care for ANY living being. Cats with FIV are like any other when cared for properly (as all should be), they have the same life span, and it’s no big deal. FIV does not morph into something else (there’s no such thing as “Feline AIDS”). FIV is species specific and cannot be transmitted to humans.

Lucky is a kind, gentle, resilient, brave, innocent soul who’s had more than his fair share of hardships at the hands of people. It’s time he have better. He’s with us in a new, loving foster home looking for the human(s) that will promise to protect him and give him real love and respect forever.

“Lucky Ducky” (as foster mom calls him) is an all-around friendly, sweet, loving boy. He adores being in the same room as his people. Even if you go in the next room, he’ll come with to be with you. He just wants to be a part of what the humans are doing! Sometimes he’ll wait in the sink for you while you shower! He’s curious about everything. If you bring home packages he’ll have to come see what you brought him (they must be for him, right?). He enjoys sitting with you on the couch or nearby on his scratch lounger. If there’s not much room on the couch, he’ll still find a way to include himself whether that’s on the back, squeezing himself into the small amount of space that’s left, or perching on the arm. “Classic Lucky” is him laying upside down, paws overhead, “fangs out”! There’s no shortage of laughs with this guy – he has tons of personality!

Lucky is not a lap cat but he does like to give affectionate headbutts, and will lick you which we say is him giving “kisses”. He likes gentle pets, but he’ll let you know with body language when he’s getting overstimulated and has had enough.

Lucky loves to look out windows! He's in a 3rd floor apartment and sometimes, a squirrel climbs all the way up that high on the tree just outside the window and he gets super excited! He also likes all the "scents" in the air coming in off the wind through the screen when the weather is warm - you can see his little nose up in the air, taking it all in.

Lucky's a talker! He especially likes to talk to let you know it’s time for him to eat, and you shouldn't waste another second getting him that food, human! He likes to say hello when you come home and will also let you know when you've spent far too much time in bed and now it’s time to get up (and feed him)! He has a purr like a motor - very soothing!

As a highly food-motivated cat, Lucky likes to know when he can expect his food which schedule and routine help satisfy. Lucky was being fed dry food (a species-inappropriate diet) in his former adoptive home and as a result, developed urinary crystals and had difficulty urinating years ago. All cats in our program eat a high-quality, species-appropriate wet and/or raw food diet for optimum health. We use the same to manage any health matters (not prescription food) so since Lucky has been back with MPA he's been eating a combination of canned and raw cat food and Lucky’s urinary health has been great while with us! Lucky’s adopter must be committed to continuing to feed him his species-appropriate diet to maintain his good urinary and overall health and wellbeing!

Lucky not only loves but needs playtime! He thrives on routine – for both meals and play (though he won’t turn down impromptu play sessions!). He’s a very skilled “hunter” of his toys and needs some level of challenge with his play. His favorite is his ‘Da Bird wand toy and he’ll sit and wait (with butt wiggles) for the perfect moment to strike! He loves to play in his cat cube and will pop out of the top like a jack in the box! He also loves sparkle balls and catnip toys. He’ll lick his catnip toys, and then hold them in his front paws while he kicks them with his back feet! Once he’s done he may snuggle with his toy. He bats around his sparkle balls, and will go racing across the home with them or take them into the (dry) bathtub, and chase them around on the slick surface. It’s fun to watch Lucky having fun!

To maintain the good health (both urinary and overall) Lucky has established since returning to us, he seeks a clean, stress-free, stable home with a laid-back calm person or persons (animals are a mirror of their people!) who are established in their life and residence. As such, we also seek a home for Lucky without children.

As Lucky slipped out when the dogs were let out in his former adoptive home on multiple occasions, for Lucky’s safety, we believe its best he be in a home without dogs so history doesn’t repeat itself. Lucky is often waiting by the door when his foster mom comes home (he wants to be with her!). Lucky’s mom and/or dad should be cautious and careful with their comings and goings and always identify where Lucky is when opening and closing the door (a good practice for any cat parent).

Because we aren’t certain of the circumstances by which Lucky contracted FIV, we also feel it’s best that Lucky be the only cat in the household. Lucky loves the company of humans and really enjoys being the only animal in his foster home and we know he’ll love being the center of attention in his new adoptive home!

It’s amazing to watch Lucky interact with people. After all he’s gone through, we would understand if he was wary yet Lucky is engaging, trusting, and loves people – an inspiration to us all. The human(s) that receive his devotion and companionship will be the truly lucky ones. Lucky is such a nice boy and great friend – he deserves so much more than the hands he’s been dealt. Will you provide that and give him a real forever family?

Companion animals are family. They’re not less than or any different from human family members and should be regarded and cared for as such. Family is forever. You never give up on or abandon family. We seek those adopters who share the same philosophy and feel the same way about these most incredible beings. If you live in southeast WI and have what Lucky is looking for and will promise to love him always, SEND US AN EMAIL to adopt@milwaukeepetsalive.org telling us about yourself and detailing what you can provide our family member, Lucky! (Inquiries that don't include this won't be considered). We can't determine potential matches from the short "Introduce Yourself" form and inquiries coming that way won't be considered. Lucky’s adoption fee is $70.
