LOCAL CAT, Washington

WASHINGTON... SHY LADIES MAN: This gorgeous feline came to the shelter in mid-June, and is now ready to find a new home! His shelter name is in honor of George Washington, but we often call him Gorgeous George. He's a big, beautiful boy who wasn't quite sure how he felt about us when he first moved into the cat room in late June, after seeing the vet. He was hissy when approached, but enjoyed brushing and a little "pet and chow." But he changed his tune when we put a lady cat in his cage for some companionship, serenading her with sweet chirps. It took us a couple of weeks, but we are now able to pick him up with a gentle approach, carry him around, bring him into the small kitten playroom for some quiet time together, and sit him on a lap for a long session of petting and brushing. When he's had enough of his human ladies, he hops onto the window sill to sit with a lady cat. With each passing day he becomes more content and social, and much easier for us to handle and love... after only a few days of handling, he is loving the contact, comfort and cuddling more and more.<br/><br/>Washington is a long-haired flame-point Siamese mix, with the white boots and faint tiger markings that are characteristic of a Snowshoe. We know his looks will attract a lot of interest, and want to be sure that his adopter knows he will need to be introduced to the home in a quiet, safe room, one where he doesn't have places to hide, and can get to know his people better before being introduced to the full home. His progress will be exponentially faster if there is another feline-friendly cat in the home. <br/><br/>He will be fine with people of all ages, though young children will have to understand that he will need time to adapt and feel safe. But cats with his personality often respond very well to tiny humans, finding them less threatening than adults. We're not sure how he feels about dogs, but he might get along well with a quiet, gentle dog who is accustomed to cats, and who is not aggressive towards smaller creatures.<br/><br/>Washington is estimated to be only 3 years old, is neutered, box-trained, current on vaccinations, tested negative for FIV and feline leukemia, and received de-wormers and flea treatments. Adoption fee is $125. Personal checks are accepted from R.I. residents only; all others may pay by credit/debit card or money order, payable to "Town of Scituate."
