Kami's Story

Meet Kami.

If you've been following our cats for a while, you may recognize this beautiful girl. Today, we're excited to share just how much progress she has made.

Kami has already experienced more ups and downs than any cat should. Sadly, she has been returned to us not once, but twice. Those returns were heartbreaking, but not because her adopters didn't love her. In fact, they cared deeply for her. The challenge was that Kami could be very unpredictable. At times she would seem content and relaxed, and then suddenly lash out without warning. It left her adopters confused, concerned, and unsure of how to help her.

When cats display behaviors like this, there can be many underlying causes. Some cats are dealing with pain, some are overstimulated, and some are struggling with fear and anxiety. After spending more time getting to know Kami and observing her behavior in different situations, we began to suspect that anxiety was playing a major role in her reactions.

Working closely with her care team, we started Kami on medication to help ease her anxiety and give her the opportunity to feel more secure. The difference has been truly remarkable.

Since beginning her medication, Kami has shown us a side of herself that was hidden beneath all that stress and uncertainty. She has become calmer, more relaxed, and much more comfortable interacting with the people around her. We recently moved her into a larger living space, and she has adjusted beautifully. Rather than feeling overwhelmed, she has embraced her new surroundings and continues to gain confidence every day.

The cat we see now is affectionate, sweet, and eager for attention. She enjoys spending time with people, seeks out affection, and is showing us just how wonderful of a companion she can be when she feels safe and secure. Watching her transformation has been incredibly rewarding for everyone who has cared for her. Seeing a cat finally able to relax and be herself is one of the best parts of rescue.

Kami's journey is also an important reminder that behavior challenges don't always mean a cat is "bad" or unadoptable. Sometimes they are struggling with something we can't immediately see. With patience, understanding, and the right support, many cats can thrive. Kami is proof of that.

While she has made amazing progress, we do believe she will do best as the only feline in her future home. She deserves an environment where she can continue building her confidence without the stress of sharing her space with other cats.

We know her perfect family is out there someone willing to appreciate how far she's come and continue giving her the support she needs to succeed. In return, they'll gain a loyal, loving companion who has worked so hard to overcome her challenges.

We couldn't be prouder of this girl and the progress she has made. She has truly blossomed into the cat we always knew she could be.

Interested in meeting this gem? Contact us to learn more about Kami and schedule a visit. We would love for you to see her wonderful personality for yourself.

For more information and instructions on how to apply, please visit https://thepetrefuge.org/adopt/ Completing an adoption application is always the first step. Shelter visits are by appointment only and available to applicants whose applications have been approved.

We also invite you to follow us on social media: Facebook at Pet Refuge, TikTok @petrefugenk and Instagram @petrefugeri
