Jupiter's Story
All about Jupiter from his foster home!

How would you describe the cat's general personality?

Jupiter is truly a sweetheart. He is a social creature and loves being part of the action, whether it's sitting on the floor by the dinner table, having cuddles, following me around the apartment, or finding a cozy spot near me to lay down. He is curious and intelligent - it is rewarding to see him grow his confidence exploring new surfaces, corners, and views from the window in his new environment. He tends to be timid around new people and will hide for a few minutes if he hears a neighbor walk down the hallway, but it doesn't take him long at all to warm up.

Does the cat enjoy being pet?

Yes! He loves being pet and brushed.

If yes, on what parts of its body does the cat like to be pet?

He loves being pet on the top of his head, his cheeks, his chin, up and down his back, and sometimes even his paws.

Are there any parts of its body that the cat does NOT like being touched?

He's not so keen on having his belly pet.

Does the cat come on your lap?

Yes, and he loves coming over to make biscuits on me.

Does the cat like to be held?

Not really. He'll let me pick him up if I need to remove him from an unsafe situation (like trying to sneak into the closet) but he doesn't like to stay held.

Does the cat sleep in your bed?

Sometimes, especially if I'm watching a movie in bed or getting ready to go to sleep - usually he goes off and does his own thing at night.

Does the cat seek your attention?

100% - he will come up to me to start a conversation and ask for petting, but if I'm in the middle of something he's very respectful of that and will watch from afar.

Does the cat like to play?

Yes! He is very athletic and usually about 15 minutes of playtime will get him good and tired.

What are the cat's favorite games and toys?

He absolutely loves his toy mice and enjoys running through his cat tunnel. He likes spaces where he can climb, jump, sneak, and have the zoomies.

How vocal is the cat?

Jupiter is a good conversationalist. He is often vocal but never loud. He tends to vocalize the most during transition times, like mornings when he knows I'm about to feed him or afternoons when I come home from work and he wants to say hi. If I move somewhere else in the apartment he'll check out what's going on and meow at me a bit, but when I'm settled into something so does he.

What kinds of sounds does the cat make?

Besides meowing, he most often gives a cackly hum (not quite a purr and not quite a chirp), particularly when he's sneaking, hunting, or jumping off something. He also likes to purr when he's feeling cozy.

Does the cat scratch a scratcher?

No.

If no, please explain.

I'm still trying to train him on the scratcher - he was going for the living room armchair until I put a blanket over it and he stopped trying. He now favors the coarse welcome mat by the front door.

Does the cat always use the litter box?

Yes - one exception (see below)

If no, please explain.

When Jupiter first moved in, he was so frightened he spent his first 2 days here under the bed. He didn't leave for the litter box during this time and started going to the bathroom under the bed, when I finally had to remove him. He had no problems learning the litter box after this. I would highly recommend blocking off any hard-to-reach places like closets, under the bed, etc. for this reason.

Does the cat ever swat (claws in) at you? If so, under what circumstances?

No

Has the cat ever scratched (claws out) you?

Only once, when I first tried to remove him under the bed 2 days after his moving in. I emphasize this is an exception as he is normally very sweet, gentle, and affectionate.

Does the cat ever nip (teeth without breaking skin) you?

No

Has the cat ever bitten you (breaking skin)?

No

To the best of your knowledge, how does the cat react to new people? Social? Fearful?

He seems to hide and watch from afar if a new person enters the home. My guess is that large amounts of new people (like a party) would overwhelm him, but he probably wouldn't take too long to warm up to 1 or 2 new guests.

Does that cat have any cute/quirky traits that aren’t covered by the previous questions?

He has the most unique little pink and black paws. I also appreciate that he likes to pet me too, whether it's making biscuits on me with his paws or rubbing his head up against me.

In your opinion, what is the best thing about the cat? Why should an adopter choose THIS cat to adopt?

By far, Jupiter's most remarkable quality is how affectionate he is. He is a wonderful cat for someone who wants the interaction, cuddles, and participation in life activities together. He is not the kind of cat who will sneak away and ignore you. At the same time, he's very capable and self-sufficient. He doesn't keep me up at night and on the days I have to go to the office for work, I don't see any evidence of acting out behaviors.

What are the cat's challenges and how have you found to best manage them?

Hard to say because he is truly a good cat. Jupiter still needs to work on the scratch post training - so far I've tried both a scratch pad and a scratch post and he's pretty indifferent to them. If there's a texture he likes, he'll go for it but this has been easy enough to manage with a couch cover and/or blanket. I'd recommend compromising with a coarse welcome mat. Otherwise, like many cats, Jupiter will need support transitioning to his new living environment. He was found in an abandoned apartment and spent 2 weeks at Animal Control getting shots and neutered before I picked him up, so I think this next transition should be a little easier. Having a sturdy cat tower with "caves" helped him feel more confident in his new territory and exploring some higher surfaces. Putting a blanket over one of the caves helped him feel extra safe as I was redirecting him from going back under the bed. Having some time together on the floor with him in the beginning also helped him build trust.
