Hero's Story

Hero (about 3 and half months old as of 8/6/2026) is a spayed female brown tabby shorthaired kitten. Hero and her siblings were trapped in Waukegan when she was about 4 weeks old. An adult female cat trapped in the same area who was waiting transport to the vet acted frantic to see the kittens and so it was assumed mother and babies were reunited. She helped care for the kittens for a few weeks until they were deemed old enough to fully ween; except when she went in for surgery it was found she had never been pregnant! She was just a really good auntie- whoops! Hero got her name because she's the reason her kitty family was rescued. When she was 4 weeks old she ran up to a family out for an evening walk who saved her and found her siblings the next day. Since we never did find their actual mom they may not have survived if they hadn't been taken in, and we know if they were outside a few more weeks they wouldn't have been able to be tamed. Now safe inside Hero is the quintessential playful kitten that always has the zoomies. She's the last kitten to come for dinner because playing is her absolute top priority. She is good with other cats but would do best adopted along with her brother Brynn or to a home with an energetic young cat (or 3!) she can play with so he doesn't drive the humans or older pets in the house crazy. She hasn't been raised with dogs but might be okay with a slow introduction to a really calm, cat-experienced dog. Her playful energy could be great for older kids but she is a little less comfortable with lots of exciting human activity and would probably be overwhelmed by preschoolers and younger.

Spay and Stay's Adoption Policy
If you think you might be interested in one of our cats please fill out our adoption application at https://www.spayandstay.org/cat-adoption/.  We will then work with you to ensure a good match and can arrange a meeting with the kitty or kitties you are most interested in.  We require a small donation as an adoption fee that varies depending on the age of the cat or kitten and offer a "bulk discount" for adopters willing to take on more than one kitty. Adult cats over 1 year- $100, Kittens 6 months - 1 year- $125; $225 for a pair. Kittens under 6 months- $150; $275 for 2, or $400 for 3 kittens. The adoption fee in each case includes the cat being spayed or neutered, up to date on FVRCP and rabies vaccines, microchipped, dewormed, and tested for FIV and FeLV. Because pet adoption is not our primary mission we have no central animal shelter and rely solely on a network of volunteer foster homes to house and socialize our adoptable cats.  While we don't have one convenient location to come and meet all of our available cats at once our individual foster parents get to work very closely with each kitty and can speak to what they are like in a home environment. We always take our kitties back if things aren't working out after a little time so we're passionate about helping you find the right match.
