Groot's Story

Meet Groot: Part Cat, Part Menace, Full-Time Criminal

Groot can best be described in one word: menace. A very cute, cuddly, ridiculously lovable menace, but a menace nonetheless.

Groot was discovered all alone in a flower bed at about 5 weeks old, crying his little heart out. We scooped him up expecting a scared, possibly feral kitten. Instead, Groot basically said, “Great! You're my people now.” Zero fear. Zero feral tendencies. Just instant snuggles and an impressive commitment to chaos.

He quickly became best friends with my college daughter and slept with her every night. He also made fast friends with Uncle Frankie, our resident cat. The dogs, however, were apparently placed on a 30-day probation period. Groot kept his distance until he decided they were acceptable members of the household. Once he felt comfortable enough to free-roam the house, that's when things got... interesting.

Have food? Not anymore. Groot will launch himself from somewhere you didn't even know he was hiding and steal it directly out of your hand. Apparently, he believes gravity is merely a suggestion and personal property is a myth.

Trying to feed an elderly cat a special diet behind a closed door? Adorable that you think a closed door means anything to Groot. He will sit on the other side waiting patiently, or more accurately, plotting. The second that door opens, he bolts inside and immediately begins inhaling someone else's prescription diet like he's been stranded on a deserted island for six months.

Taking the dogs for a walk? Absolutely not. Groot sees a leash dragging across the floor and thinks, “Excellent. A new toy!” He grabs it, plays tug-of-war, and refuses to let go until the 100-pound dog starts dragging him across the floor like an inner tube behind a speedboat.

Does any of this deter Groot?

No.

Does he feel remorse?

Also no.

Groot is naughty, he knows he's naughty, and frankly, he appears to be extremely proud of his work.

He also enjoys knocking remote controls onto the floor, kicking balls and springs underneath the refrigerator and TV stand (because apparently he is personally responsible for keeping the humans entertained with a flashlight and a broom) and attacking your toes while you're trying to sleep.

But here's the thing about Groot: his greatest endearing quality is actually being a menace.

Because this little troublemaker makes us laugh every single day.

And when he's done committing household crimes, Groot transforms into the sweetest cuddle bug you've ever met. He loves falling asleep in your arms or curled up in your lap, where he'll happily snuggle for hours. He has the sweetest little chirp (I've never actually heard him meow!) and some of the loudest purrs imaginable.

He loves his people. He loves his fellow pets. He loves food that doesn't belong to him. He loves attacking moving objects. He loves stealing things. And most importantly...

Groot absolutely LOVES being Groot.

So, is he the right cat for you?

If you're looking for a quiet, dignified, well-mannered cat who politely minds his own business...

Probably not.

But if you're looking for a hilarious, affectionate, mischievous little character who will keep you laughing, steal your food, attack your toes, terrorize your household, and then curl up in your lap and purr like a tiny motorboat...

Groot may be your guy.
