FIV is spread through serious, penetrating bite wounds -- The type of bite wound that is seen most often in feral, intact tomcats -- or by blood transfusions. FIV+ cats can live in a household with other non-FIV+ cats if they are all non-aggressive. Cats that live together without fighting and are easy going in nature are at little risk for becoming infected. Cats with FIV can live very long, perfectly comfortable lives.
